During the first week in September I started reconnecting with my outdoorsman roots. Having been a avid hiker and camper through my years at Dartmouth, followed by trips through Canada and the Rockies during medical school, I hadn't been in the woods since. With Lexa, 9, and Jessa, 7, begging for bugging, Lora and I spent three lovely days and two subfreezing nights in a lean-to not far from Bennington. The family loved the smoked pancakes, cindered cocoa, and cold wash water. Having survived unscathed, Lora and I celebrated by joining Allan and Ann Myers at the Woodstock Inn for their bountiful Sunday brunch. It seemed fitting to be together since they were on their way to pick up son David following his Dartmouth freshman trip.
George Merrill writes from Baltimore that daughter Melissa was accepted as a Dartmouth '91. Unfortunately for Dartmouth she opted for Oberlin.
After hearing from classmates trekking through the Himalayas, John Pierce writes that he's studying their creation. As a geophysicist with PetroCanada in Calgary, he is interested in continent drift. He's passing up our 20th reunion to join an international team on an ocean drilling program in the Indian Ocean. "One objective is to precisely define the northward motion of India which led to the creation of the Himalayas."
Tony Abruzzo has resurfaced in Tucson where he practices in a two-man law partnership. He notes that he's married and has two daughters, aged 9 and 10. He asked for a tip of the hat to Phi Gamma Delta brothers and friends Jeff LeVeen and Joe Leeper.
Sin Tung Chiu writes that after graduation he went on to Juilliard School and Teachers College at Columbia for advanced violin study. Since then he has played concerts throughout North and South America, Puerto Rico, Europe, and the Far East. This past spring he returned to Hanover as guest soloist with the Dartmouth Symphony Orchestra. In addition he taught a violin master class and an informal "Conversations with Mr. Sin Tung Chiu" in the music Department. He asks the whereabouts of Sherwood Guernsey.
Sherwood lives 12 miles down the road from Bennington, in Williamstown, Mass. He serves as a representative to the Massachusetts Assembly with major interests in health care and conservation. His name was in the local papers as a facilitator between New York and Massachusetts conservation groups wishing to develop a park along the common border at Peterburg Pass.
Word from the Miller household places Don Ethan Miller in China screenwriting for Bethun with Donald Sutherland. He notes that working in China is "a bit of Heaven and a bit of Hell."
As we prepare for the 20th, think of the faces you'd most like to see at reunion. Drop me a line with your current whereabouts, interests, Dartmouth contacts, and the long lost friends you'd love to see in June.
