For Big Green baseball standouts Mike Remlinger and Tom DeMerit, the second of June wasn't just the last day of classes, it was the first day of the professional baseball draft. Tensions were running high at 41 West Wheelock, the residence of roommates DeMerit and Remlinger. "There was a lot of nervous energy," DeMerit says. "I went for a long run and then did my laundry for the first time since February."

The eventual news was good for both '88s. Remlinger, considered by Baseball America to be among the best lefthanded pitchers available in the 1987 draft, was selected 16th in the first round by the San Francisco Giants. DeMerit, a right-fielder described by teammates as having a "gun for an arm," was picked by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the fourth round.

"I would love to graduate with my class, but baseball is more important right now," said Remlinger. He refused to speculate on the details of his contract, but the Dartmouth pitcher could receive a six-figure signing bonus.

DeMerit, who said, "It has always been my intention to go pro," wasted no time before signing. Less than 48 hours after receiving his bid, he signed a $40,000 contract.

Good-bye Red Rolfe Field, hello pros: Tom DeMerit '88, left, soon to join the Los Angeles Dodgers, shares the excitement as roommate Mike Remlinger 'BB, right, talks with reporters after being drafted by the San Francisco Giants.
