At the Class Officers Weekend held in May, Sandy McGinnis was elected president of the Dartmouth Head Agents Association. This was, no doubt, in recognition of his outstanding performance in last year's Alumni Fund as well as our progress so far this year.
Jim Stewart formed Boca Biomedical, Inc., about a year ago. His company distributes medical supplies throughout Florida, concentrating primarily on Johnson & Johnson orthopedics. "One girl, Kristen (age 5) and one 'adopted' dog— a Brittany spaniel aptly named Brittany—along with vice president and wife Kathy."
I had the opportunity to spend a couple of hours with B.J. Batchelder recently. His company has embarked on an aggressive acquisition program. Since he is agreeable to paying substantial finders fees, he can be contacted only through me! He and Carol have just completed building a house in Aspen and are in the process of moving from Peoria to Chicago.
Eunice and Larry Schwartz are both teaching with Larry now in his 22nd year of teaching high school social studies. Eunice received her master's degree in special education and they write that Eric, 14, and Lisa, 12, are both soccer fanatics.
Kevin Shore sends the following synopsis of the last 24 years: "1963-65, Army map service; 1965-67, finished Dartmouth; 1967-68, RCA-EDP; 1968-70, Arthur Anderson Ad Services; 1970-1984, fish business (looking for a challenge, found it, screwed up). Now doing computer systems and real estate on Nantucket. Married twice, divorced twice, four great children."
Also in the real estate business and developing golf courses in Denver is NewellGrant. Newell and Judy have been married for 15 years and have four children—Margaret (10), Will (7), Newell Jr. (5), and Caroline (3). He had lunch recently with ElleryMcClintock, who is doing social work in Atlanta.
Under the heading of "Reading Between the Lines" perhaps the most meaningful piece of correspondence received recently was a card from Whit Goit on which he wrote nothing.
George Estabrook is a professor of plant ecology/evolution at the University of Michigan. He is planning a sabbatical leave in Portugal to study rural pre-industrial revolution agriculture.
Tom Parkinson sent in quite a bit of news (bless you, my son,) much of which you'll probably see in the newsletter. Summarized briefly, after hanging out in Hanover with Woody Flowers and working for the College in the Summer Peace Corps Training Program, he left in the fall of 1964 and enrolled in the M.B.A. Program at University of Massachusetts, where he met Donna, to whom he has been married lo these 21 years. They have two sons, Scott, a Penn State freshman, and Michael, accepted at Dartmouth in the class of 1991. After graduating UMass in 1965 and a short two-year stint with A.T.& T., he completed his Ph.D. at UMass and since then has taught at University of Delaware, Penn State, and Lehigh and has recently been appointed director of the M.B.A. program at Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pa., where he is also professor of marketing.
Stan Roman has accepted the position of dean and vice president of academic affairs at Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta. Having spent six and a half years in Hanover, he will begin his new assignment in August.
Karl Winkler reports that he is still practicing law in Rockford, Ill., and has been elected president of the local Dartmouth Club. His twin sons are juniors in high school this year and are starting to think about Dartmouth and Illinois as possible colleges. Karl visited with Paul Hale in November. Paul is a vice president with Veronis, Suhler & Associates, Inc., an investment banking firm.
