Training Secret: Hit the Library
SEPTEMBER 1987

In his seven years as coach of the Dartmouth cross-country team, Vincent Lananna's teams have never lost to Harvard. In addition to the regular training regime, the captains have initiated their own workout. To get prepared for a Harvard meet, the team does the infamous "Tower Run." On the day beforthe meet, a pack of 50 or more runners heads for Baker Library, charges up the west stairs, runs through the Tower Room, and snakes down through the Reserve Corridor.

Next, the team heads down the street to Kiewit. The runners enter through the back door, and as they race around the corridor they make insulting "geek" noises at the computer jocks before exiting on Main Street. Finally the pack stampedes down Webster Avenue to the President's House. An unsuspecting and clueless freshman is selected to ring the President's doorbell and—what else?—run.—T.H.
