Dear Class: I'm beginning to think you folks are stepping out with some other secretary! Our news barrel is in need of mail, so kindly hop to it.
By the time you read this, chances are that the votes will have been counted and the suspense will be over. No predictions here —only to mention that I haven't heard any good candidate jokes.
When Lee and I were in San Francisco last March, we were unsuccessful in efforts to reach Chap Wentworth. His recent letter explains that they were at Lake Tahoe and continues: "I'm doing some fun things . . . helping a man I like to run for the S.F.
Board of Supervisors .. . editing a book about the skiing that the forty-niners developed to handle the heavy snows. They raced down the mountains four abreast, hitting speeds close to 80! I've got the 50th Reunion on my agenda. Regards, Chap."
Newsletter editor Bob Austin reports that his busy life was clouded by the passing of three family members —aged 90, 93, and 94. We send our sympathies.
Also our sympathies go to the friends and family of Kenneth B. Elliot Jr. Ken passed away in August, a victim of cancer. Ail obittuary will appear in a subsequent issue.
A welcome note from Les Nichols, who is putting together the military-service section of our 50th Reunion book (have you sent him your summary?) "Lord willing, Edie and I will be at the 50th Reunion. Really looking forward to renewing old friendships with old guys (like me). I've completed 69 wartime sketches so far.
Joe and Esteri Harpham are enjoying their home in Canterbury, N.H. The woodstove demands three cords, so he lumberjacks in addition to gardening and volunteer Civil Air Patrol. Esteri is also in the garden and a volunteer at nearby Shaker Village.
The word from Annapolis is that CliffFalkenau is well after surprise open-heart surgery in Tampa, Fla. He and Helen were on "their boat when the problem erupted. All is well now, and with the help of friends they got the boat back to home waters. Cliff says his recent birthday was one he almost didn't make and so is doubly glad to be around. Nice to have you back, Cliff. He extends Annapolis hospitality to any classmates passing through by car or boat!
Bulletins from the College:
Dartmouth's research awards jumped by 20 percent over last year, with the Medical School accounting for more than half of the total. The College marked 15 years of coeducation during the week of September 19.
And, 50 years ago, the class of 1940 entered its junior year!
Have a good Thanksgiving and I'll talk to you in December.
