The Blacks and Ripleys are still sad about missing the mini-reunion. We lingered over each signature on the cards you sent. RussGoudey and I had a great reunion by phone. He enjoyed the Synclavier show but, remembering when he used to earn a living by writing music for occasions, he fears it may kill 70 percent of that work.
Russ, John Minary, and Rusty Ayers went to a memorial service for Harry Baehr at the Century Club in New York. Russ made a fine tribute to Harry. Look for it in '29 Up. He also relieved our worry about Oscar, who's now living with the neighbor who traded kitty-sitting with Harry.
Hal Hirsch wrote John Roemer about the poems John wrote before he died, "It always amazes me that however matter of fact we may be on the surface, when hit by some cataclysm we can summon from the depths of our feelings those verbal expressions the poignancy of which we never thought ourselves capable."
At the recent Alumni Council meeting Polly Chinlaud, Dick Black, and I were moved to new high hopes for Dartmouth. President Freedman's strength and wisdom are more and more evident. Did you see him face Sam Donaldson on ABC? Now the Boston Globe praises him.
Charley King, Bill Magenau, CharlieSchaffer, and Ben Stacey are working on our 60th Reunion fund. To be the best we have to have the best students, and blind admissions takes money. Dartmouth has less than half the endowment per student of the closest of our rivals. Money for our college may be the best thing we can do for our country.
Our women students, faculty, and administrators are wonderfully impressive, but I enjoyed telling one of them: You may be a few years younger And be full of joy and bounce, But numbers are really from hunger; It's how long you last that counts.
