For our mini-reunion—October 9 and 10—the Norwich Inn was our gracious and familiar gathering place. The Chases,George and Carolyn Bingham with Susan, Frank and Urs Weber, Ed and Mary Grady,Townes and Joan Harris, Paul and Ann Henegan, Dick and Romie Hollerith, Zekeand Gloria Lanzillo, Andy and JoanMcCulloch, Marty and Ginnie Marino, all swung in off the highway Friday for an ongoing dinner, the Inn's social event of the day.
Saturday morning the annual class meeting was held at the Topliff-New Hamp Cluster Lounge—the one our class helps to support with social and cultural events through the college year.
Afterward, the dorms hosted a barbeque for '47s and wives, a good mixer and a real treat. Our supportive relationship with this dorm rates a special column, next time.
Bob and Mary Phippen, Bill and JeanHallager, and John and Helen Trethaway joined the group for our banquet, joined also by Rosalind Barnes '88, our senior intern in the office of President Freedman.
Our intern project has sponsored 22 seniors over 14 years. Rosalind thrilled all of us with her grace and understanding of the present Dartmouth scene, as she works to be involved with the intern program.
I want to profile our classmate Sam Tassel. Sam has accepted the job of head class agent for the next four years, succeeding Jim Osborne. Sam, along with Alan Epstein, attended a Dartmouth seminar in September and enthusiasm was evident from both men.
Sam came to Hanover with the navy in 1944, did some active service and returned to graduate in 1947—well, almost. Sam needed three more credits, so he spent the summer of '47 taking a course on "Cultures of the South Pacific." He got the diploma in '48, but not until he had made a name for himself. Undergraduate Tassel set up an office near downtown Hanover and sold skis. Good goods, but Jim Campion didn't think it was fair and went to the top. To no avail, Sam had it nailed.
In the real world, Sam who is from Marblehead, Mass., and later Lynn, became a family man. He and Ruth have a son and daughter now grown. He also formed an insurance firm, named for himself: Admiral Insurance. To put it all in a nutshell, Sam did well, expanded into travel and real estate, and lately has done deals in shopping malls, developments, and a Cajun food chain.
Now Sam has agreed to put his sales experience to work as our head class agent. He loves a challenge, and certainly has the right job.
Sam sees his goal as keeping the steadyDartmouth supporters enthused, while finding incentives to bring some of our outof-touch classmates closer to the class and College.
Good luck, Sam Tassel.
