What is the old saying? That Dartmouth men and women spend four years trying to leave Hanover and a lifetime trying to return? This year's Homecoming weekend in Hanover seemed to prove the point. While the bonfire seemed tiny (was it smaller or are we just bigger?), the bourbon and cider kept us warm late into Saturday afternoon, and PCs, the Co-op, and the bookstore benefitted from our alumni shopping frenzy. (Why one needs yet another sweatshirt or another New England scenic calendar is beyond me, but the Visa card gets high usage in Hanover anyway.)

Mike Perella drove in from his new home in southern New Hampshire; the Mac Ewans strolled in from their new home in Hanover. The MacEwans were not willing to reveal how many guest rooms they have, recognizing that there is great demand for an Occom Inn annex. I will snoop around and publish the number next month.

Jeff Pope parked his child, a Gerber baby look-alike, at the pretzel bowl in the class tent while he parked himself at the keg. BillGoodspeed was unable to make the weekend, but sent the message "I care." The class committee responded, "We don't." Also spotted wandering aimlessly around Hanover were Bill Helman; Meg CoughlinLePage, who has moved back to Portland, Maine, with her husband and daughter; Denise Dupre, who, contrary to my last report, is creating hydro-electric power plants rather than briefcases; Rich ("Askme anything about micro-breweries") Akerboom, Laura and Charlie Moore, Parkerand Katie Currier Small, Geoff Edelson,Bob Lisk, Peter Rentschler, Bob Garry,Paul Mott, Susan Fagerstrom, and Rich vonRiesen.

Another season brings another slew of wedding announcements. Back in July Mark Liponis married Siobhan McNally, a Yalie and fellow physician. Both have completed their residencies and will enter private practice in Montana. Markita Moore, who is working on a doctorate at UNCChapel Hill, married Charles Bellamy of Columbia, S.C., in August.

Wall Street Journal addicts may have noticed that in a September article Bruce Judson was quoted defending our generation. "We're not boorish," he said. "We're not arrogant." Speak for yourself, Bruce. On a happier note, Bruce will marry Nancy Dolgin on March 6.

Recently, a number of "A Day in the Life of ... " books have hit the best-seller lists. In order to create A Day in the Life of America, hundreds of photographers all across the country were asked to shoot a roll of film on a given day, and return it to the publisher. The result was a wonderful, eclectic collection of photos illustrating all sides of America. We are thinking of having a similar effort that would result in a 10th Reunion slide show. Anyone interested in helping should contact Rich von Riesen at 409 West Mercer Street #402, Seattle, WA 98119.

Happy New Year.
