You must have heard the bells ringing on April 30. At Class Officers Weekend in Hanover it was announced that for classes out 25 years or more 1934 had been named Class of the Year! What an honor! You all helped since they review mini-reunions, class projects, Alumni Fund participation, local alumni activity, communications, trust funds, and bequests established.
Jack Tobin, who took over as '34 president, was presented the engraved gavel and Lois Frankel was asked to stand and be recognized. It was another tribute to our leader in these activities, Moe Frankel, who was named Class President of the Year posthumously. As you know from the newsletter, many of Moe's friends were in Hanover and gathered around Lois that weekend. They spoke in heartwarming tribute about our dedicated classmate.
Our great communicator, Bill Scherman, was recognized as Class Newsletter Editor of the Year, the first ever to receive that honor a second time. As we know, Bill does a lot of other things. Maybe you've seen "Dartmouth Today," a three-times-a-year videotape that visually covers current events and issues at Dartmouth. Bill is one of its founding consultants. And then there's Common Sense. Bill is one of this student newspaper's two alumni advisors. The paper recently presented the first "Orton Scherman Award," named for Orton Hicks '21 and Bill, to the person "who has done the most during the preceding year to make a positive improvement in life at Dartmouth" (see March issue p.16).
If you read your May issue carefully (p. 46) you noted that Dick Campen was saluted for his fascinating recent book, "Winter Park Portrait." Two of his lawnbowling rivals in Mt. Dora, where he and Helen now live, sent me copies of the local paper that had a full-length picture of Dick on the front page and applauded the beauty of the prose and pictures in this book. It's the latest of many books Dick has published about archaeological groundings and architectural history.
Also from Florida, Fred Robbe sends good news. He married Wanda Brother in January, and they are now living in his Stuart home. And '34 has a golfer who shot a hole-in-one on April 15 on the Miles Grant C.C. course: Jim Bayles. Wow! At our age.
