1934

On September 18, 1930, President Ernest Martin Hopkins welcomed the class of 1934,664 strong, at the opening of Dartmouth's 162nd year. The very next day was the annual freshman-sophomore football rush, and with charcoal-smudged foreheads (to tell friend from foe) we beat '33. For Delta Alpha we dressed in crazy costumes and paraded on Memorial Field. Freshman football, coached by Pat Holbrook, led by Bob Michelet, and quarterbacked by SamFishman, was undefeated, as was the '33 team. We enjoyed greeting Commander Richard Byrd on October 13, after his year exploring the North and South Poles.

Freshman Glee Club, directed by DonCobleigh, included these still-active voices: Don Allen, Jim Keeley, Dick Hardt, JackFish, Harry Mccann, Jack Tobin, TedGermann, and Jack Gilbert.

Our winter teams, basketball, track, swimming, were undefeated. Among their stars were Jake Edwards, Al Kahn, and Jim Ballard. Jack Shea, and Don Mahoney led the Winter Sports team in the Intercollegiates at Lake Placid. Bill Knibbs starred in the Carnival show, "Five Hundreds Gallons," at Webster, and a Smith girl was Queen of the Snows. Alan Hewitt began his lifelong stage and screen career in "June Moon." No rushing or even fraternity parties our freshman year, though many of us probably got an idea which houses we might join in fall 1931.

To The Dartmouth's board were elected Jerry Danzig, Carl Hess, John McCoy,I.M. Sulzberger, Van Thorne, and several others. In the Commons orchestra (and perhaps still playing) were Jack Wholey, JunieKneisel, and George Goss. Tom Beers and Fred Robbe were on top in getting out our Freshman Green Book. In the spring, '34 baseball lost only one game. Bob Miller was our outstanding pitcher. Coach Harvey Cohn said that the freshman track team was the best he'd ever coached.

Probably the most shocking event of our year occurred on May 13, when fire devastated the 136-year-old White Church.

It was an unforgettable year, all right. I'd need a lot more space to include all the names and events that contributed to it.
