Dave Hoffman has left his private law practice in Rock Island, Ill., to return to criminal defense work, his first love. TheMoline Daily Dispatch writes about this, citing Hoffman as a former associate judge and head public defender in Illinois. "I'd rather do something useful and satisfying," says Dave. "I'm sold on the concept that just because a defendant doesn't have money to afford a private attorney, that doesn't mean he shouldn't be appointed as good or better legal counsel. That may sound like something out of the sixties, but then so am I." Dave is chairman of the Criminal Justice Committee for the Illinois Bar Association. Dave and wife Jane have a nine-year-old, Millicent, and John is one. Dave did a 13-year stint at an Army lawyer. The article also tells of Dave being a pretty good cartoonist. Must be from doodling in court.

Tom Clarke married Donna Moran on April 9 in Hamden, Mass. Donna is a bit younger than Tom, or at least looks it. Tom is in a three-way orthopedic practice in Springfield. One of the partners is Terry Hansen '67, who was an usher in the wedding. Other '66 people there included TimPagie, Bill Ferris, Gene Nattie, RickMacMillan, Bill Bower, and yours truly... although I had better things to do on a nice spring afternoon and only made the reception and dinner. Whitey Burnham was there also. Those who knew Tom at Dartmouth and/or were at another Clarke wedding in Ridgewood, N.J., some 20-plus years ago, will be amazed to know that Tom hasn't improved his dancing over that span. Slow, fast, you name it. It's not a pretty sight.

I heard from Dave Coughlin recently. He tells of living in Oregon. He likes it. "I feel a little frustrated that I am not heading a major corporation or discovering new galaxies as some of our classmates have done, but living in this part of the country does have its intrinsic rewards." I got my hands on a great article, with pictures, about Panda Bear Coughlin doing and training for triathlons. Obviously people who do triathlons don't tend to weigh in at 265, which is what Panda tipped the scales at while toiling for Blackman. Really, the pictures of Panda doing these triathlons look like a cross between Robo Cleary and Caleb Loring. Long, lithe, tuned, toned unbelievable. It looks like Dave took the 100 pounds he's lost and spread it evenly among all the Green graduates at Clarke's wedding! Including Clarke. Quoting the article "Lawyer Lifestyles" in The American Bar AssociationJournal: "During his five years of triathlon competition, he has risen from a 38-year old novice to a top competitor in the men's 40-44 age group. His race results since 1984 are a litany of top-10 finishes." It goes on to say that Panda's resting pulse rate during triathlon season varies between 34 and 36. (You gotta be kidding me!!!) Tendonitis has become a problem with Panda's running and he allows as how he might concentrate on biking next year. He fears a little more burnout each year of triathloning, and says it gets harder to compete as you get to the top of your age group. How did he get interested in triathloning?? He had a nearfatal fall into a crevasse on Mt. Hood in 1981. Makes sense. On the home front, Dave lives with wife, Lisa, and daughter Jennifer, in Baker, Ore., where he maintains a thriving law practice.

From Oregon to New England. Doctors, lawyers; let's hear from an Indian chief?
