Since the eight Ivy institutions and Army and Navy began competing in the Women's Outdoor Heptagonal Championships in 1983, Dartmouth had finished no better than fourth place. This year the team surged to finish second to Pennsylvania by a 112-108 score. Liz Walter '89 set a Heptagonal record in the discus with a throw of 157 feet seven inches, which earned her both first place and All Ivy honors. Walter also won the shot put with a toss that went 43 feet, four and a quarter inches.
