Bill Yaggy, our mini-reunion chairman, wants to remind everyone of the two fall events he has planned. Along with the class of 1968, we will sponsor a party for those coming to Hanover for Dartmouth Night. The gathering will take place after the Yale game on October 14 in the Smoyer Lounge. Spouses, families, and friends are most welcome.

Bill and his wife, Amy Leveen, are also planning an open house at their home near Baker Field after the Columbia game in New York. Those planning to attend should call Bill at 212/601-3018.

For some reason my mailbox has not been overflowing with class news this month so I will take time to tell you some of my story. My career path has included a series of happy accidents. After college and a graduate degree in medieval literature, I tried teaching at an independent school in New York and found I liked it. Offered a principalship and a concurrent opportunity to run an Upward Bound program, I discovered I really loved school administration, surprising myself with the strength of my reaction to the work. I then went to Stanford for a doctorate to learn something about my chosen field. Since then I have been a public school superintendent and a headmaster at two independent schools. I still find the work exciting because of the constantly changing nature of the human problems involved and the ability to influence the direction of an important institution that affects so many students' lives. When I left college, I never expected to have to master everything from testing to fundraising, and sports liability to college placement.

But the constant new learning has been one of the best parts of the work.

Penny and I have been here with our sons, 12 and 16, for five years now and enjoy being back in the New York area.

Now to avoid an essay on the current state of American education by your secretary, please send your own news immediately so I may pass it on.
