Bill and Judy Breed hosted some "local" Upper Valley classmates during Labor Day weekend at their Lake Sunapee residence. It was an afternoon of water sports (optional) and an evening buffet supper in a picture-perfect setting—a great way to wind down the summer. Some ventured out on the lake in Bill's latest, greatest ski boat, with Bill at the helm—a very fast and very wet ride. Al and Bev Fiertz and Gail Sanderson crossed over from Vermont. Johnand Judy North, having survived a complete renovation of their farmhouse and the birthing of their sheep, came down from Lyme. Frank and Drury Logan and Angusand Liz Russell were the College contingent, and John and Kay McCrillis came from nearby Newport. Bob and LoisHolmes, now full-time residents of New London, and Fred and Molly Carleton '53 of Hanover completed the group. Fred is the new '53 class secretary and he's off to a great start with a tough act to follow, Tom Bloomer.
Several items of news have come to me from Bob Binswanger, who wrote after a recent Hanover visit when he was following up on a former student at Boston Latin Academy who is now a Dartmouth undergraduate. He had an opportunity to visit with President Freedman, but had less success hooking up with our College-employed classmates Logan, Russell, and BillQuimby, who were tied up in their offices. Bob mentioned classmates with whom he has been in contact in recent months. BillMattox was around for his son's MIT graduation and then headed out to Greenland where for 19 years he has visited and worked toward falcon preservation. Jack and DodieBoyle were at the Cape in their new summer home—this must make them true seasonal migrants, having recently established a Stuart, Fla., condo base. Bob and PatBrace were again in Northport, Maine, this summer with Bob the weekend commuter. Northport has been the Binswangers' second home for years. Finally, Bins reports that he has a new Maine neighbor: PeteMcSpadden. He sent along a copy of what appears to be his own remarks at the memorial service for Bernie Lewis last May and with Bins's permission I shall distill them into an obituary for a future issue.
For several years Bins has been the headmaster at Boston Latin Academy, a Back Bay unit of the Boston public school system. He described his life as a "surprise a day," a constant struggle with politics which seems to dwarf concerns for learning. Just after his letter arrived, Edythe happened to spot Bob being interviewed on Channel 2 and commenting in more detail about the tribulations, including financial, of providing adequate education in the city school structure.
Talk about surprises, I've had several requests for a copy of the Rabbi MarshallMeyer article from which I prepared the summer column. I just got a note from Marsh, who'd like to see it himself! Oh, to be famous.
