Believe it or not, I have too much for this month's column—an affliction which they claim is a class secretary's dream—so I'll start with the dated news and save some phone visiting for next month.
Congratulations are in order for a number of '73s. The Wall Street journal on June 2 reported that Mike Keeshan has been appointed president and chief operating officer of Saatchi & Saatchi Advertising/ New York. A news release from New Line Cinema dated July 18 announced that Donna Bascom has been promoted to senior vice president, business affairs, with gready expanded duties. Donna only joined New Line in September of '88 but has been making a mark in the entertainment industry for years, having previously spent time with MGM/UA Home Video and CBS/Fox Video.
Paul Ulbrich dropped a note from Honolulu where he is a researcher at Straub Clinic and Hospital to share good news about a paper entitled "Borrowing, Generating ana Distributing Credit through Research Papers: What is an Optimal Linkage of Scientific Knowledge Claims?" which he wrote for the Sociology Department at Columbia and which was presented at the First International Congress on Peer Review in Biomedical Publication in Chicago last May. An abstract of his work has been included in an American Medical Association publication, Guarding the Guardians: Research on Peer Review.
Lee Rosengard wrote to Mark Harty to give his apologies for missing the reunion which he had planned to attend with Andrea and their three daughters. He had a good excuse, however, having just won a David- slew-Goliath decision in U.S. District Court. Lee represented Advanced Medical in a multimillion-dollar suit against Johnson & Johnson which began on May 25 and which was awarded to Advanced Medical on June 30. The vast majority of Lee's time with the Philadelphia law offices of Stradley, Ronon, Stevens & Young is spent "representing defendants in securities fraud and protracted commercial matters," so his victory in championing a smaller plaintiff against a corporate giant was especially sweet to him.
I wish there were room to reprint a whole letter which I received from Derrick Crandall in response to one of my calls in quest of news. As much as possible follows verbatim but the occasional omissions are a necessary concession to space: "I confess to a certain neglect of the ties to Hanover for several years. My memories of days in Hanover and my commitment to helping others enjoy the same—remain strong, but the press of other obligations and the confusion I feel associated with Dartcoll's media notoriety have made active cultivation of my links a low priority.
"Laiayne and our two children (Alysson 8 and Carolyn 5) and I just returned from a week in Boston—a far cry from my memories of visits circa 1970-1971. We were 'conventioning' I serve on the board of the American Society of Association Executives—and enjoyed Boston's best from Fanueil Hall to the JFK Library.
"The outdoors remains a big part of my life. Since 1982, I've headed the American Recreation Coalition. We work on public policy issues ranging from use of federal lands to recreational tourism marketing, representing interests as diverse as Disney and Coleman, youth hostels and bicyclists, boaters and skiers.
"In short, life is frenetic and wonderful. We dash off to London and Rio and Wai- kaloa and celebrate a return to our home bases of McLean, Va., and Corolla, N.C. I hope the '9os bring a renewed link to Hanover and with those I shared some special times with in .New Hampshire."
Amen.
