It's hard to believe, but three months between submission deadlines has actually left me with too much news to report! Mike Winn is describing himself as a "mogul of Ethiopian restaurants" these days, an offshoot of his days as a war correspondent in that country. At the same time, he continues to do a lot of writing, having shifted emphasis lately from adventure travel to what he describes as "esoteric Chinese," in keeping with lecturing and teaching an ancient Chinese method for increasing energy circulation in the body. The method defies description, but it sounds something like Tai Chi. Mike and his wife, Anna Joy Gayheart, live in Manhattan.
Jon Fauer '72 writes to mention that last summer he collaborated on a film for Buick written and produced by Russ Mack, who works for Trio Communications in Flint, Mich., these days.
John Grossman, now a specialist in hand surgery, has joined the Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and the faculty at New York University. He is enjoying his relocation to New York, where he now has the pleasure of often seeing John Low and TrevorO'Neill.
Paul Feakins has been named headmaster of The Hun School in Montgomery, Ala., a position he will have assumed officially over the summer. Paul joined the school in 1986 as assistant headmaster and director of the upper school and has been serving on an interim basis as acting headmaster. He received his master's in teaching history from Tulane in 1977 and held several teaching/administrative positions in Florida and Louisiana before arriving at the Montgomery Academy. Paul and his wife, Ann, have three children: Elizabeth 13, Susan 11, and Nicholas 7.
Rick Smith dropped a note from Merion, Pa., complete with an adorable picture of twoyear-old Tom, to update us on happenings in the Smith family. Rick himself became a partner in the firm of Miller Dunham Doering & Munson and by now his wife, Rosalind Warren, should be deep in orders for her new anthology of women's humor, Women's Glib. Apparently Tom is a capable order-taker, being described as a "chatterbox but still cute as a button."
Gregg Brown was joined by the mayor of Brawley, Calif., at the ground-breaking ceremonies for a 122-home subdivision he is developing which will be known as Ventana Ranch. The press release for this event was short and sweet but it reminded me so much of Gregg reporting that he was a member of Sphinx with as much weight as his having achieved All-Ivy, All-New England football status. Gregg and his wife and three children live in Riverside, Calif.
Since his great letter last year, DerrickCrandall has been named chairman of the advisory board for the Take Pride in America program. Take Pride in America is a partnership of thirteen federal agencies, all fifty states, and private sector organizations working to promote grassroots, volunteer activities in support of public resources. Derrick is still president and CEO of The American Recreation Coalition in D.C.
Both Thad King and Paul Sehl called to let me know that Todd Johnston suffered a heart attack in May but has come through a quadruple bypass amazingly well. Giving up old living habits will be tough, Todd, but we'll all be rooting for you!
In another happy ending, Thad King reports that Jeflf and Debbie Calhoun had their sixth child on Mother's Day. We think that may be a class record, but welcome news from anyone who wants to dispute our theory.
Coming attractions: Great letters from Heidi Haas reporting on Fred and their new daughter Samantha, and from Tom Helfrich, who sends tons of news from the new Germany.
