REPORT FROM THE COUNCIL
NOVEMBER 1989 Patricia Fisher-Harris '81

The Alumni Council's 158 th meeting last June was, by most accounts, one of the more productive sessions in recent years. "There was an atmosphere of expectancy, " one Councilor commented, "rather than the tenseness of Council meetings we've had lately." Controversial issues were raised and debated, in particular the recommendations of an ad hoc committee to change the size, structure, and organization of the Council. There was give and take on other concerns as well, such as the tough choices to be made in maintaining a high quality student body through "need blind" admissions in the face of rising costs and reduced federal funds for financial aid.

The 1989-90 leadership of the Council and the chair of the Nominating and Alumni Trustee Search Committee were elected:

• President, Murry Bowden '71

• President-elect,William Mont- gomery '52

• Nominating and Alumni Trustee Search Committee Chair, W.G. "Pete" Barker '54

The Barker committee is soliciting alumni input on the replacement for retiring Alumni Trustee John Steel '54.

Planning is under way for the upcoming Alumni Council meeting November 16-18. Highlights of the program include:

• a progress report by the ad hoc study committee on the size, organization, procedures, and effectiveness of the Council;

• a report by Norman E. "Sandy" McCulloch '50, former chairman of the Board of Trustees, on the work of the Committee on Board Organization, authorized to study the structure and operation of the Board, in cluding the trustee selection process;

• a presentation by Provost John Strohbehn on the progress of the Planning Steering Committee; and

• a hands-on "Technology Fair" that will show Councilors how faculty util ize computers to teach courses in the humanities and social sciences.
