Although the mini-re- union featured a number of social events, a football game, and golf, the most significant and poignant event was the rededication of the 1945 weathervane instruments at the northwest corner of the Hanover Inn. In a brief service attended by wives and classmates, Harry Hampton and Vic Smith provided words of wisdom and prayer to honor those classmates who died in World War 11. Inside the inn opposite the elevators are similar instruments which show the outside conditions. In addition to the above named, thanks are due to ShortyPierce and Matt Marshall of the Inn; the former worked with Harry to purchase the new equipment and the latter was most cooperative in helping to have it installed. 1945 is grateful to all who assisted in what we believe is the only Dartmouth memorial to deceased classmates of WW II.
At the Friday night dinner and awards ceremony, Moose Rowan was named as 1945's Man of the Year. He has served in almost every class office and also on the Alumni Council. Moose continues to attend Council meetings and to prod the College on key issues. Also John McCauley won the Johnny Brooks Golf Tournament with Allon (Mrs. Shorty) Pierce second.
Another feature of the weekend was the large number of people attending, including many for the first time. Those included Gunnar and Jeanne Reynolds (Texas), Dick Gilman (California), Ed and AnneCrane (Colorado), Charlie and AnneMurphy (New York). Total attendance was 81, (divided among events—the largest registration record for a mini-reunion. In addition we briefly saw John Gooding and Aland Ellen Gluek at the football game and on Sunday afternoon we talked with PaulGlover, who was being walked by his Great Dane. In addition to the people mentioned last month, thanks also to wives like BetsyBarr and Betty Jordan, who work on these fall reunions.
We can forget the football game but the clambake at the home of Bob and GladysAldom was a great success despite a persistent rain. We are grateful to them for providing their yard—and their home when the rains came—for a delightful evening.
At the meeting Bob Paulson reported on plans for the 45th Reunion in 1991 with classes of 1946 and 1947. (This is written after the secretary's return from a reunion of the Michigan 1949 law class, where 90 members of a surviving 290 attended at least one function.)'We would be most happy to see an equal or better percentage show up in 1991. Start thinking of a New England tour ending june 10-12, 1991, in Hanover. For the moment Bob's committee includes Steve Hull, Cliff Jordan, and Ted Smith as treasurer. Ted has requested early enrollees who will provide a $45-per-person deposit to fund start-up expenses.
And if you are not quite ready to finance plans for reunion, this is a reminder that there are copies of the Glee Club and Band tape produced for 1945 available, a great last-minute Christmas present—stocking staffer or otherwise. Direct your orders (with $11.50) to Dartmouth Nostalgia, RR #2, West Lebanon, NH 03784, and be sure you obtain enough tapes for your Dartmouth family, friends, and clients.
On a sad note we learned that NancySkakle, wife of Jack, who did such a wonderful job in production of the 25th Re- union book, died in mid-September. Jack has had many health problems in recent years and we are eternally grateful to both of them for what they accomplished in 1970 and extend our sympathies to Jack and their children.
This is the last column of this decade and by the end of the next ten years we will really be thinking of retirement. In the meantime send news of your activities, travels, hobbies, and pastimes to keep classmates inspired. Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year.
