Those of you who didn't attend Dartmouth Medical School likely missed a fascinating story about our classmate, Dr. Stew art Alexander. The fall issue of the School's Alumni Magazine tells how his WW II duty in Italy led to a discovery that was really the forerunner of chemotherapy treatment for cancer. It relates to the bombing of Bari harbor and the releasing of mustard gas stored on a ship. What a gift to the world he made! He certainly deserved the army's belated Certificate of Appreciation. Copies of this fascinating story will be found on our 55th Reunion table.

Football game watching has given away to New England skiing or Florida sunning for '34s at this time of year, but the good memories of fall gatherings remain. At the Yale Bowl there were the expected Connecticut residents: the Bob Griffins, BabeSheas, Vinnie Cerows, Joe Swenssons, the George Thomas family, and, just before her London trip, Lois Frankel. From further distance, the Bob Webbs, GeneOrsenigos, of course, and Joy Dwyer. And down from Hanover to keep us in line, the Bill Schermans, Ed Browns, and MayoCohens. A surprise was Nick Nanos, up from Florida. Undoubtedly a good group will have gathered at the home of Stan andBarbara Smoyer prior to the Princeton

game. One of the lifetime New Yorkers who might have attended had made a surprise move to Colorado. Bob Kolbe reports that after a summer trip to England, he and Nona decided this was the time to retire and move to a townhouse on the 11th fairway in Denver. Surprise, he did not join the 49 classmates we now have with Florida as their chief address. In a New York Times article listing Top 100 best retirement places (excluding big cities) Florida had 12 places, with Daytona, St. Pete, Lakeland, and Ft. Myers in the top 50. Hanover was 47th on the list, which was based on climate, cost, safety, services, leisure-time activities. Highest '34 rankings were Dave Hawes in Bloomington, Ind., in 8th place, and HowieGussenhoven in Charleston, S.C., 12th.

Not everyone moves to Florida. Two of our longtime New Jersey residents, MaxPalmer and Dan Colesworthy, are managing to handle their home fronts after the passing of their wives and the onset of health problems. As a perfumer, Max still creates in his laboratory. And ex-shipping broker Dan still drives around in a trusty Barracuda, and each has a growing and caring family nearby.

John and Edie Murphy have made the big move from the old house to the condo and it's still West Hartford, so zip and phone are the same. They travel around but like Hartford as their base, and John's presence there is essential as he's still chairman of the board.

Wherever you're living, you should have received Bill Wilson's initial letter covering plans for that June 12-14 super gathering and asked us to send back a card indicating our plans to attend. Your classmates hope your answer was Yes!
