Class grandparents proliferate. Every time I check one of the sons of the class of 1949, the advent of grandchildren is proclaimed. For example, Dr. George Sougleris, preeminent gynecologist in your scribe's old home town, Syracuse, N. Y., reports that Rita and he are grandparents to three children of son Mark, and about to add a fourth from son
PhillipLet's back up. After graduation from the University of Vermont Medical School, George underwent an internship and thereafter a residency in obstetrics and gynecology (ob-gyn) at upstate New York Medical Center in Syracuse, before opening an office approximately 25 years ago. After 24 years of delivering babies night and day, George ceased obstetrical services last year and restricts his practice currentdy to gynecology at 1200 East Genesee Street, the oldest medical building in the "fair city of diversified industry in the heart of scenic central New York." Son Mark, the eldest, is employed by Squibb and Company in Princeton, N.J., specializing in marketing. Son Phillip is a marketing specialist with Harcourt, Brace & Jovanovich, Inc., the publishing company in New York City. He resides in Mohegan Lake, N.Y., and commutes, painlessly we hope. The youngest, Peter, is scheduled to graduate this June from the University of Rochester School of Management with a master's and expects also to engage in marketing. Rita and George have resided for many years in Manlius, a suburb of Syracuse. She performs herculean volunteer services for a number of agencies. George has served the Onondaga County Department of Health in various advisory capacities over the years, but equally as importantly, he is in shape. He runs four miles three or four times a week and plays tennis. He also longs to return to his native New Hampshire for our 40th Reunion in June.
Not yet a grandfather? but vicariously trying, Bob Underbill, another class member who graduated from Harvard Law School, retired last year from service as house counsel with Burlington Industries, Inc., in New York City. Bob and wife Barbara reside in Scarsdale and he has become associated as "Of Counsel" with the law firm of Kreindler & Relkin in the Big A., specializing in textile law. There are two sons: Paul graduated from Haverford College last June and works in New York City, but plans to enhance his scholarly bent with graduate work next fall. Son Mark is a member of the class of 1990 at the College. An ace in floral design, Barbara devotes herself to paddle tennis and tennis, which has always been our hero's championship sport. Barbara and Bob are both superior racketeers, and the Fox Meadows Tennis Club in Scarsdale is their venue.
Lynne White Jr. was elected chairman and chief executive officer of Portec, Inc. last December. Bud, who resides with wife Bernice in Winnetka Ill., had retired from Portec in 1984 as senior vice president of commercial and governmental relations. The company is an industrial equipment maker ana Lynne was probably lifted from retirement for resuscitation.
Paul Woodberry recently retired as a director of Robert Half International, Inc., as part of a buyout of the company. Don't worry about "Beer." When asked how he had time to serve as a director, he replied:
"No sweat." Often, Beer's speeches are even more eloquent than that.
