No, that wasn't March you heard roaring in like a lion. It was "Dartmouth in the World," held March 3—4 at the U.N. Coverage, no doubt, will be considerable in the media, but as a thought for perspective, reflect on John Dickey's idea that "There's nothing wrong with the world that better human beings cannot fix." Let's do our part, whatever it may be.
'ROUND THE GIRDLED EARTH. Jim McCrum made his biennial trek to the U.S. from new South Wales last summer and included a five-day sojourn with Bob Wilkinson on Martha's Vineyard for tennis and such with Patti and Rene Blanc (RFD 481P Hidden Cove, Edgartown, MA 02539-973). At last report, Rene was with A. B. Chance Co. ana Bob's medical firm was still in Washington, D.C. Anita and Ray Marchant (10 Arrowhead Dr., W. Simsbury, CT 06092) couldn't make the scene but reminisced via phone. Ray may have been busy doing his act with Bank Building Corp. in Windsor.
Jim also enjoyed tennis and golf with Dick Wallace in Philadelphia and Charmaine and Frank Treadway (170 Las Palmas, N. Ft. Myers, FL 33903) who are happily retired away from the hill winds and ice gnomes.
Peggy and Jim Vail had a fantastic time at the Seoul Olympics. Back home their address is 341 N. Sheridan Rd., Lake Forest, IL 60045. Patty and Gene Carver (30032 Avenue Esplendida, Rancho Palos Verde, CA 90274) were headed for mainland China last fall. Gene is prexy of Hoffman Associates in Los Angeles, a capital management and real estate counseling outfit. Three daughters and three grandsons are spread out from coast to coast, so they rendezvous in Steamboat Springs. Makes sense to me. Fritz Jewett didn't have to leave Khakifornia to participate in the America's Cup races for the sixth time, but wrote that "Flying on a 'cat' at 20 knots is like driving with son George in the Mille Miglia in his '49 Ferrari going flat out." Don't know where that was a year ago, but it wasn't Perth Amboy. And finally, Annie and Tom O'Connell are somewhere in Spain, writing a play and researching the Canary Islands, but probably back in Seattle (1120 8th Ave. Apt. 2004, zip 98101) this summer.
Prospects for a travelogue at our 40th a year hence seem pretty good.
HITHER AND YON. George Nugent (1360 Sanderling Dr., Englewood, FL 34224) is self-employed doing lawn wells, pumps, etc. Ginny, and Jim Hutton are at 5 Piatt Lane, Rye, NY 10580. It's a short commute to Thomson McKinnon in White Plains. Weylene and Pete Bucklin checked in from Lafayette, CA 94549 (1061 Via Alta) and say son Randolph (Harvard and Stanford) is a beginning prof at UCLA but "his fiancee is Dartmouth '84 so there is spirit and continuity in the family."
Regretfully, we must report that Bill Cone succumbed to emphysema April 29, 1988, in Midland, Tex. Chuck Little was lost to us November 18, 1988, in Baltimore, Md.
Gary Earle passed away December 6, 1988, in New Bedford, Mass.
Meanwhile, March departs like a lamb and you can send your chops, loins, or wool to . . .
