The grim reaper has taken two more of our classmates since our last. Bud Blunt succumbed to a very active cancer while visiting a son in San Diego on January 26; and Ben Eckerson passed away on February 22 where he was residing in Michellville, Md. (Obituaries are in this or a later issue.)
On the brighter side we would like to record that Bob Kaiser was presented with a much deserved Alumni Award "for the many years of contributing to Dartmouth through volunteer service to his class and fraternity, and for his educational fundraising and creation of a Bequest and Trust program that has become a model for other schools."
We have a note from Andy Calleja from whom we've heard very little over the years. He reports having been on the phone recently with Clem Burnap and catching up on the doings of some of his Thayer School buddies. Andy plans to be on hand for our 50th with wife Consuelo, daughter Mary, her husband, and two grandsons.
Steve Bachelder, having stepped down as active pastor of the Attleboro Falls (Mass.) Central Congregational Church, is to be installed as pastor emeritus of that church at a ceremony on May 22. Steve's son Bob '73, a minister to the Worcester City Missionary Society, an amalgamation of 70 churches that work with those plagued with AIDS, lack of housing, and other problems, was recently in my hometown of Pittsfield, Mass., to speak for his cause during a lenten program.
In January, Bill and Barbara Lyon cruised to Samoa, and the Isles of French Polynesia (Bora Bora, Morca, and Tahiti). They were dispatched on this exotic trip by winning a drawing of the donors to the Royal Oak Foundation's restoration of Buckland Abbey, Sir Francis Drake's house in England.
Dr. Dave Reid writes from Idylwild, Calif., that he will retire from his practice in June, having found an excellent replacement. Dave will miss our 50th in that his youngest daughter will be married on June 10. He has not forsaken the East however, as he and Jean will spend three months at their farm in New Hampshire this summer.
Herb Hirschland writes of a pre-Christmas soiree given by Curt and Barbara Anderson at which Armando and GinaChardiet were in attendance.
A note from A1 Loberg details his "round-the-world" trip starting this past March 20. "From Washington's Dulles to London for a few days and plays; thence to Bangkok, Thailand. When sated by the beautiful Thai girls [Marje is with Al to keep things cool], we board the Sea Princess and cruise to Singapore, Bali, Borneo, the Phillipines, and Hong Kong, before wending our way home via San Francisco." A1 doesn't say when they'll return but as president of the Navy League of the United States he'll be on hand to mastermind a pre-launching ceremony for the attack submarine USS Annapolis on May 18 at the Rotunda of the State House in Annapolis, Md.
