A request to Bill White for his views on the S&L crisis netted a beautifully written autobiographical sketch challenging me to condense for these notes as follows:

His banking career: beginning in the fall of 1929 in a small bank in Connecticut; national bank examiner; Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers; president of Wellesley National; spurning John Benson's Shawmut's offer, then merging with South Shore, of which he became vice chairman and in which he helped acquire banks in Massa- chusetts for Multibank Financing, retiring in 1975. His second and parallel career began with wife Shirley's and his buying the Wellesley Inn in 1960, renovating, expanding, then contracting with Treadway to supervise operations of it. With son Bill Jr. as assistant manager of it, Shirley and he can live six months in Florida and six on Frye Island in Sebago Lake. Sanibel Island was a former residence where they'd see PhilHolden, but in 1987 they moved to a condo on a golf course in Fort Myers. His cogent views on S&Ls I'll leave to'him to report at our 60th.

Dick Knight wrote that he still is active in the financial end of his fuel business in Hudson, Mass., with his son-in-law handing the balance. To break up the calcium deposits in his joints he plays tennis with a young set, also golf when weather permits. He sees his two former roommates occasionally but few other classmates. No, Richard, Schnecksville is not more remote than Rumford.

Hart Gilchrist sent some additional information on Red Rolfe's career. We are still trying for the Hall of Fame for Red.

Ben Hardman wrote of his concern when people ask what has happened to Dartmouth. My report on COW in the June Newsletter should encourage him, particularly the paragraph on "A Way of Learning"

Charlie Hill's postcard dated June 18 from Norwich noted that he intended to visit the Hanover contingent this summer.

Somehow the paragraph on the college/university issue was omitted from my report on Class Officers Weekend in the June Newsletter. Copies available upon request.
