Normally one does not choose Florida in July for summer vacation, but when there are complications in buying, finishing, and furnishing a condominium which will be our next winter's home, normalcy goes out the window dow. June and I spent a couple of weeks over the 4th of July in Stuart, after enjoying en route a delightful beach party with Rayand Jerri Builter on the shores of Long Island Sound in Fairfield, Conn. It was very hot, yet surprisingly crowded, but we were able to accomplish our mission and get in a few rounds of golf before going to a chilly Cape Cod for the rest of the summer.
One advantage to travel along 1-95 this time of year is that the foliage is more abundant, the countryside more lush and attractive than in December or early April. I didn't see any '36ers in the area, though I did hear that Babo Babcock has enlarged and improved his Holiday Inn in the Punta Gorda area the better to serve any '36ers who chance to be in that part of the peninsula. The Babcock Ranch, with its alligator farm, ostrich nursery, and herds of beefalo and other cattle, is a landmark fully worth the visit.
From Hanover, Paul Guibord advises that the winner of the Class of 1936 Award for the outstanding senior woman this year went to Kristen G. Dillon of Palo Alto, Calif. A member of Phi Beta Kappa and graduating summa cum laude, she was also president of the Outing Club, a member of the Varsity Crew and of Casque & Gauntlet, as well as a regular contributor to The Dartmouth. She was also the winner of the Hazeltine Chemistry-Physics Prize for the student showing most promise in both fields and winner of the Robert and Augusta Goodman Award for that woman member of Cabin & Trail most responsible for stimulating interest and involvement in the woodsmen's team.
On the Soaring Eagle trophy now on permanent display in the Zimmerman Lounge in Blunt there is only room for her name but now you know the rest of the story.
The '36 fall mini-reunion will be held October 6-7, the Holy Cross game weekend. While it may be too late to get space at the Econo Inn in West Lebanon, anyone who can make it will be welcome Friday night for dinner at the Sheraton. The class awards banquet will be held Saturday night at Pierce's Inn on Dogford Road, Etna. Keep in mind: 36 + 55 = 1991 reunion, June 10-12.
