October 1940. The football season is into its second weekend when the Big Green is upset by Franklin and Marshall, 13-21. Bob Hickey and Ted Arico are promoted to first team status. Sid Bull is the only Green harrier in the top three of the cross-country run against the University of Vermont. Fall house-parties are set for the first two days of November, but the word is out: "Fraternity bars are to close by 2:00 a.m." Protesters warn of the dangers early closing will pose due to "commuting." Ollie Quayle heads college Democrats as the Presidential election nears. Wendell Wilkie wins in the student poll by a 3-1 margin, but the faculty go for him by just 9 votes. 495 register for military services; 50 are subject to the draft. The new Defense Tax raises Nugget prices to 40c. October 1940. Fifty years ago.
Meanwhile back at the ranch, the big 50th Reunion sneaks to just 20 months away. That doesn't leave much time for making your plans for Hanover, June 1992.
Have you sent in your 50th Yearbook information to Alex Fanelli? If you've put off doing it during the hot, dog days of summer, make doing it an agenda item for today. There's a lot of work for Alex and his crew when they do get yours, so give them a hand with an early report.
Summer is not much of a time for correspondence. The mailbag has been more empty than usual and I have given up on my calls for the summer, finding it difficult to locate anyone.
I did have a letter from Gardie Bridge, now retired on Cape Cod. Gardie was worried about my lack of leadership for a "safesex" dance which had been scheduled for my home town (later cancelled).
And Ken LeSure called from Bethesda to report on reunions and graduation at Sidwell Friends School, where Ken has been a teacher for 32 years. He has now retired and finds life a little empty after all those years working with young people. Ken met up with three generations of Dartmouth Blackmans at the Sidwell graduation in June. The group included Gary Blackman '68, now Athletic Director at Sidwell, Bob '37 A, Dartmouth's most successful ever football coach, and the newly graduated Melissa, who is now a Dartmouth '94. Melissa is the 91st student Ken has sent to Dartmouth in his long tour of duty at Sidwell. His first Dartmouth student, incidentally, was Dick Page '54, Dartmouth's newest trustee.
And finally there was a pleasant summer evening's dinner with Doug and Betty Duffy also of Bethesda as they made a swing through the Champlain Valley in which the Duffys have spent many happy days. Doug is recently retired from a life-time career with the CIA in Washington, but works with Betty in her gallery.
