December 1940. January 1941. Bob Broweris 125 pound champ in both wrestling and boxing. In the "most scientific" fight, Mike deSherbinin wins the 155-pound boxing crown. StubPearson is re-elected class president and Ted Arico, Bob Dewey, John Montagne,Ben Page, and Paul Torian form the Executive Committee as a result of the December elections. Archduke Otto of Austria visits the campus as the class selects senior jacket style #2 in an early (because of the war) selection. They'll cost you $13.75.

The DCAC meets on proposed budget cuts. Earl Blaik resigns as football coach to take the job at West Point. Bob Gorman gets a ribbing from friends when he is identified as "Handsome Bob" in a "Life Goes to Smith College" story. Gus Newell is appointed Assignments Chairman for Green Key. Hoppy gets a defense job, but he won't leave Hanover. Tuss McLaughry is the new football coach. Thirty students lose library privileges for having books out without authorization. Charlie Weinberg is named co-director of Outdoor Evening for the 1941 Carnival.

And so things went as we ended 1940 and started 1941. Fifty years ago. Back at this end of the century, a great gathering of 51 classmates, 44 wives, and one widow assembled for the mini-reunion October 12-14. It was a spirited and happy weekend in spite of a driving, all-afternoon rain on Saturday. Some of the hardier classmates and a few wives sat through one downpour after another to watch an exciting Dartmouth football team overcome its own mistakes for a convincing 27-17 win over Yale.

The rain didn't wash out all the fun and excitement that began with a snappy class meeting, led by Prexy John Corwith, on Friday afternoon. A happy hour get-together and dinner in Alumni Hall followed. A Dartmouth Night turnout filled the lawn in front of Dartmouth Hall and spilled out to cover much of the east side of the campus, indicating that the Dartmouth spirit is still enthusiastically alive. The sour note was the realization of how far along we are, which came when Football Coach Buddy Teevens was introduced as the son of a member of the class of 1952.

As the rains came down the class enjoyed a pre-game renewal of friendships in a large corner of Leverone Field House, where tables were set up for our class.

Post-game festivities at Hotel Coolidge in White River showed no signs of having been dampened by the afternoon precipitation either. The 1991 edition, the last before our big 50th in June 1992, will be held on the weekend of October 11 13. Don't miss out on all the fun. Make your plans now.

Alex Fanelli reported at a meeting of the 50th Yearbook Committee on Friday that 142 questionnaires had been received, and the information had been placed in the database Alex is developing. If you haven't gotten your questionnaire in yet, do it today. We want this book to be a complete history, and everyone counts.

Finally, Dick Higgins told me of a fine visit from Paul Torian in San Francisco. Paul, on a tour of the Northwest, came across a plaque saluting the architectural design work of John Storrs in Portland, Ore. Paul's attempts to reach John were unsuccessful.

Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
