Don Cole and MooseRowan fulfilled a longtime dream when they left on a Yugoslavian freighter headed for its home port from Montreal. When I asked Rickie Cole about their return date she said, "I have no idea. The ship is going into drydock when it reaches homeport." They were anticipating passage on a return freighter, but hopefully firm reservations will not take as long as the original passage. They are excused for having missed the September 14—16 mini-reunion, but we will expect a full and interesting report in June either from Yugoslavia or from wherever the next freighter takes them. The call to Don had to do with class nominating committee business, and after my conversation with Rickie, I called the other member, Steve Hull, at his office. The report from there was that he and Jean were on vacation in Switzerland until September 12.

Dave Kendall's (or perhaps his son's) car earned a bumper sticker which states "This car climbed Mt. Washington" this summer. Dave admitted that he enjoyed the trip despite prior misgivings about the "Goofers" who drive to the top. He wrote, "I love to hike above the timberline but not if I'm exhausted by the time I get there." He reported that, other than the Sherman Adams House on top, not much had changed since he last saw it in the forties.

Jim Fannon reports that they will be building a new home on Hilton Head Island and moving there at the end of August.

A provocative and interesting thought about the controversial valedictory speech at commencement came from Fred Shaefer who suggests that what was said and what apparently is going on in Hanover reflects a college that has lost its way and does not know how to bring the pieces back together. Fred questions the timing and presentation of the comments as does this secretary, who feels that a college senior should have more manners than to publicly insult special guests of the college in this case the class of 1940.

Hank Dutcher is still active in his Rochester, N.Y., law practice and, according to Frank Aldrich, he exudes "energy and dynamism in every direction." Apart from his law practice, Hank is very active in Rochester activities.

Another important player in the same city is Frank Hutchins, who is taking on the role of special gifts leader for our 45th Reunion. When Frank or one of his assistants calls please reach to help out with a meaningful gift.

A September Executive Committee meeting covered final reunion plans, various social functions (thanks to classmates in the Hanover area), and a football game. By the time you read this we will know if the 1990 Big Green is Ivy champion. At last year's committee meeting Nick Sandoe was voted in as a member. This year Sylvia Reed, widow of John, will be elected to serve with Trudie Butler in working with the increasing number of widows to make sure they know they are welcome at class functions. Sylvia, who lives in Hanover, has been active in 1945 activities and in reunion planning.

Since you will read this very close to Thanksgiving, let us hope that we can all give thanks for an end to the Mideast crisis; and if that is not yet realized, pray for an early and safe homecoming for our armed forces and for long term peace.
