As I write this, my third column, with previously written columns yet to be published, my cry for more news has not yet unleashed the closet writers who will be sending in hordes of class news. However, I know that my mailbox is about to start filling up with tidbits from each of you.

Don Folkers writes from Portland, Maine, "Having been at Harvard and Dartmouth, and having appreciated the uniqueness of Dartmouth College, I find it hard to believe that people are seriously considering changing to a University format. Dartmouth should never become such an ordinary factory." I agree.

In passing on the back-up data for the secretary's job, Dick Masterson advised, "In August I started a new job in my field of equal employment opportunity law with the Public Health Service in Rockville, Md. It is part of the Department of Health and Human Services, and incorporates a number of organizations such as the National Institute of Health at Bethesda and the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta. In addition to responsibilities in the areas of law and program administration, I will have more opportunity to address groups within the agency. This, in turn, will provide added incentive to stay current with developments in this rapidly evolving field of law."

Paul Clarkin writes from Colorado Springs that life has taken a major change for the Clarkins. "Last September, I resigned my position as CEO of American Federal Savings, a position I had held for nearly 18 years. Though such things aren't on one's list of aspirations, the move was not unexpected. The collapse of Colorado's real estate market has been devastating to the S&Ls. Seven of the state's ten largest thrifts either are insolvent or were so and have been recently resolved.

"Given the nearly daily headlines regarding the S&L debacle, I sometimes feel I missed out on something. When the R.T.C. came in, they found an excellent staff in place along with well-documented loans and excellent books, records, and systems of internal control. Even Peat Marwick couldn't find a single thing to "ding" us on in their management letter. Three times since 1980 we added new capital via public offerings of common stock. There were no insider transactions or sweetheart deals with developers. I didn't have my family on the payroll. We sponsored no sex orgies, bought no senators or regulators, owned no planes, yachts, condos, hunting lodges, or fine works of art to be hung in the home of the CEO. At least Charles Keating got some vicarious thrills along his path with Lincoln Savings.

"One month ago I began a new career as a sales associate with The New England. The company has the largest and finest agency in southern Colorado, and it allows us to stay in Colorado Springs. It will take some time to build up a clientele, but based upon the first month, I think the potential is excellent and I'll find it very satisfying."

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
