Just 56 years ago on June 18 the class or 1934 became alumni, and by now a lot of us will have attended a 60th high school reunion. For me, it's back to Dayton to join Sam McGray at ours. Congratulations on completing another active year.
As you read this, Harry and Dottie Espenscheid will be on a Dartmouth tour of Russia, leaving their Illinois farms to prosper by themselves. Another alumni tour happily provided opportunity for me to give Rena Moore a circle tour of N.Y.C. before her flight left for Egypt. Tour was fine but no other '34s turned up.
Our most distant classmate is still one of our most active. Leslie Lummis gives Guam the benefit of his sizzling ideas for a better society. His "National Revolving Fund" would eliminate taxes within two years. A tax-free society wow! After you sell it to Guam, Les, come back east.
Another long-time '34 writer, LewisMeyer, is through writing books. With the four children through college he doesn't have to look for the big bucks, but is still active and book-connected through running his bookstore and reviewing books on TV, radio, and lectures out there in Tulsa.
Speaking of writers, in earlier columns we listed 27 still active classmates who authored books now available in Baker Library. Here are eight more of our distinguished authors who had a published book at Baker before they passed on: William B. Cahn, Calvin Calmon, Moe Frankel, John Jay Gordon, H. TheodoreGregory, Alan E. Hewitt, Albert E.Kahn, and Elliot B. Thomas. Listed earlier, Bob Singleton would now be in this group.
You know from Bill Scherman that you were well represented at Class Officers Weekend, and we had the thrill of being present when our unbeatable Ed Brown received his Class Treasurer of Year Award. It was good to have our female members of '34 so well represented. The wives were there and so were Lois Frankel, HelenClark, and Molly Heston, the widows on our executive committee. Class of '35 delegation sat nearby and shouted, "Beat '34 on the 55th Reunion record books!" Now we'll hand them a 56th year Alumni Fund record.
