Our fall mini-reunion, September 18-19, started in great style on Friday night with cocktails and a delicious buffet dinner at Dowd's Country Inn in Lyme. Dowd's is new to us, and food and setting received very favorable response from all. Saturday morning, after the class executive committee meeting, we met at Thompson Arena for pre-game tailgating. The day was warm and pleasant, making this part of the weekend especially enjoyable. As for the game, Dartmouth got off to a miserable start and trailed Penn 7-0 at the end of the first half. However, our team came alive in the second half, with Jay Fiedler throwing five touchdown passes. The final score, 36-17, seemed like a special gift to our class. After the game we had plenty of chances to toast our victory: first at the Etna hilltop home of Bob andTanna Fernald, and then at the oft-visited Pierce's Inn, where we had another of Reggie's special dinners. After the meal a group of singers gathered around the piano where, in the absence of Paul Lynch, the accompaniment was provided by Mary Craumer, a guest of Bill and Mim Macurda. It's always nice to see classmates and wives who don't get to Hanover very often, and this time Joe andMargaret Davis were the welcome additions. Altogether a delightful weekend.
Wounded knee department, as of mid-October: Bill Niss, many weeks after surgery on both knees, was released from the doctor's care and was walking with a cane. Marge Curtis was at home after replacement of her right knee, walking with walker or cane. Frank was learning housework. Jackson Smith was still in rehab—in a hospital for which he was the architect!—after replacement of his left knee, but he was expected home within a few days. In an another area, Paul Lynch, had extensive back surgery, involving removal of several discs and spinal fusion, way back in January. In October he was still in much pain, and his movement was limited. He also was using a cane or walker. We wish them all complete recovery—soon!
