An announcement in which the class and College can take justifiable pride is the election of David Sharrock to the position of chief operating officer of Marion Merrill Dow, Inc., the pharmaceutical firm based in Kansas City. Dave has been serving as executive vice president of the company and was, since 1988, president and CEO of Merrill Dow before it combined with Marion Laboratories. After a long career with Merrill Dow in Cincinnati, Dave and Barbara Sharrock will move to Kansas City this fall. In addition to holding several responsible leadership positions in the pharmaceutical industry, Dave is a director of Fifth Third BanCorp, Cincinnati Bell, Inc., and the Ohio State University Foundation.

Another event proving that effort, personal commitment, and superior production does pay off was the election of our estimable newsletter editor to the position of president of the Newsletter Association. If John Murphy can inspire others to produce newsletters even close to his standard, the entire College will be enlightened and amused. The class officers meeting also elected me Secretary of the Year.

A wonderful photo of Gardner Defoe in his camp literature places him in a fast moving stream, white bearded and tan, standing tall with fly rod in hand and eyes fixed on an off-camera fish. Doc looks like and is a seasoned outdoorsman who has headed camps and wilderness trips since 1961. I cannot recreate his literature but the programs look terrific. He operates four Vermont winter ski camps and two Birch Island, Maine, canoe camps of five weeks each. These are for youngsters up to 17 years of age. Write Gardner Defoe, Box 101, Kings- field, ME 04947, 207/824-3794, for information.

A proverb says that when a door closes, another opens. Certainly that should be the case for David Payne, who recently announced his early retirement as the top financial officer of the Bank of New England, which experienced great turmoil because of real estate lending problems. None of the problems were blamed on Dave, who significantly was not purged when federal regulators moved in earlier this year and caused a wholesale housecleaning. However, a new chairman and his team of executives came in. Now Dave is headed back to Hartford, praised for his "steadiness" and "guidance" by the chairman during the bank's recovery. Dave had previously been president of BNE's Connecticut subsidiary before accepting the financial post and relocating to Boston.

The Manchester Union Leader recently ran a brief feature on Chief Justice DaveBrock of the New Hampshire Supreme Court. Judge Brock is quoted as saying that timely resolution of disputes is the greatest challenge facing the judiciary. That certainly is true in Chicago, where you can get to trial in the state court in about six years. Dave is a graduate of Michigan Law and served as a Marine Corps lieutenant from 1958-61. He was first appointed to the Superior Court in 1976 and two years later became a member of the New Hampshire Supreme Court. He has been chief justice since 1986.

Those of us who have been concerned about possible growth of the undergraduate College should be reassured by the recent Trustee action which virtually freezes growth of undergraduates at a level only slightly above the present enrollment through the 1990s. I view that as wonderful, both for the College and the classes yet to be enrolled. As have previous classes, they will enjoy the best that Dartmouth can offer in a class they can get to know.

Congratulations to John Whiteley for another productive Alumni Fund campaign. He and all of his assistants are to be commended for a terrific job.

I'm sad to report the death of Allan R. Weiner, New Haven attorney. An obituary will appear in a later issue.
