Lotsa news this month, beginning with yours truly. Lou Ann, Elizabeth, and I are expecting an addition to our family. "Dinky" (class of '12) is anticipated'round mid-February, and we cannot conceive of a more wonderful valentine. Elizabeth continues to bewilder, bemuse, and bless all of us, and is already diplaying far too many of her father's personality traits for his comfort and peace of mind.
Also in the family way is Mikael Salovaara, who writes that he and his wife, Beth, just had their "newest, not second" son, Jackson Stewart. Mikael was able to fit the delivery into his busy schedule jetting worldwide for Goldman Sachs's Water Street Corporate Recovery Fund, a $500 million effort which he manages. Reliable sources inform me that he has taken up weight lifting and bicycling in all his spare time.
Along the same lines, Rick Paul writes "our second child (and son) arrived on May 23 (my 37th birthday). Timothy Carey Paul joins his brother Ricky as a potential Big Greener, although Ricky has already expressed a desire to play football at Notre Dame. Heard from Mark Sheehan who is completeing his medical residency in psychiatry as an air force captain in San Antonio, Tex. Mark recently worked at the Johnson Space Center in Houston and in July, after completing his residency, will be assigned to Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Tex. Best wishes from Detroit. Hopefully, by the time this is printed, the Pistons will have become NBA Champs for the second year in a row." Thanks for the note Rick, too bad about the Pistons though.
This reporter received a press release from Donald L. Drakeman, who is president of Medarex, Inc. Medarex has developed a novel therapeutic reagent known as a bispecific antibody and is used to treat cancer. According to those who know, "bispecific antibodies are chemically or biologically engineered proteins that can dramatically enhance the therapeutic potential of monoclonal antibodies." Medarex was founded by three Dartmouth Medical School doctors, and is developing treatments for AIDS and other infectious diseases, cancer, and cardiovascular disease.
Also in the news is my old debate pal (a national forensic champion) and MIA Tom Foley, who was recently front-page news in an article on his job as special assistant to Governor Casey of Pennsylvania, a cabinetlevel position. Tom reports to the Governor on issues of importance to Southern Pennsylvania, including senior citizen topics, the environment, education, and anti-drug efforts. Prior to his appointment, he served as executive deputy secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry. After leaving Dartmouth, Tom was a graduate fellow at the University College, Dublin, then became counsel to the Peace People of Belfast, Northern Ireland, where he was the first American ever selected to the executive board of the Nobel Prize-winning organization.
Our own Sports Illustrated writer Robert "Sully" Sullivan won a silver medal for the Dartmouth Alumni Magazine for Best Article of the Year for his "Dino Wars" piece which appeared in February 1990. Some tasty treats from the treatise: "The squabble grew dinosaurian in its dimension, volcanic in its implications If a buildup of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere killed the dinosaurs, or if a hole in the ozone finished them off, what does that mean for us? For our CO2-spewing cars? For our cholofluorocar-bon-chomping refrigerators?... The stakes, like the invective, seemed to be getting higher and higher."
Finally, congratulations are in order for our one and only Jim Bildner, head agent extrordinaire. At last count in the Green Derby, the class of '75 ranked first in our class group in dollars received, percent of objective, and matching gifts. That Jim really knows how to raise money! A hearty wah-hoo-wah to all of you who gave both time and money.
