Our Treasurer, Ben Shaver, tells me that as of August 22, 45 classmates who had paid class dues in other years had not paid this year. I didn't know the recession was hitting us old guys that hard. Also, die Class Endowment Fund for our Great Issues-type course could use some pumping up. Just a little every year from each of us Would make it all a reality.
Captain Frank H. Barker, U.S.N. (Ret.) and Rosanne W. Greene were married on June 21 in Tucson, Ariz. Many of us met Rosanne at our 40th. We rejoice with them, and wish them many years of joy in caring for each other.
More honors for three of our classmates: Dave Davis, Frank Gilory, and Rod Stinehour will be honored by die College at the kick-off for the Will to Excel Campaign November 15-16 at the Lincoln Center in New York. Each will receive the Presidential Medal for Outstanding Achievement and Leadership. The two-day affair will include: a gala cocktail party on Friday; a special program to celebrate excellence at Dartmouth, featuring a special film; recognition of the honorees; an address by President Freedman; and a black-tie dinner/dance with remarks by E. John Rosenwald Jr. '52, Tuck '53, chairman of the campaign. "Saturday's events turn from celebration to challenge, as the Dartmouth community gathers for 'The Dartmouth Summit: Great Issues of the 21st Century.' Leaders in the arts, government, education, and the humanities will meet in a series of councils exploring the difficult issues that confront humanity as we near the next millennium. The final session of the day will focus on higher education and how Dartmouth will specifically serve to address issues."
I hope many '50s will attend Friday and Saturday, and make a joyous mini-reunion. Phone 603/646-2879 for information.
Sue and Joe Medlicott lost their mothers within eight days of each other in mid-July. Sue's mother had Alzheimer's for years. Joe's died at home in her sleep. Great joy and thanksgiving for both. Joe writes of their funerals, ".. .laughter and friendship and good food and wonderful memories of two remarkable ladies."
We are sorry to report that Bernard A. McPhillips died last December 18. He lived in San Francisco, graduated from Tuck in 1951, was divorced from Mary, and is survived by his son Ramsey. Another son, Bernard, was a Dartmouth man, but he, also, is deceased. Our sympathy and condolences to all who were close to him.
The Tuck classes of'50, '51, and '52 reuned September 27-29 in Hanover. I received the word from Dick Echickson too late to plug it but I hope they had a glorious time.
Please don't forget our 45th Reunion, scheduled for June 1994. Mark your calendar.
