Since this is the last issue of 1991 it seemed appropriate to remind you all that the payment of your class dues is essential to insure the continuation of your Alumni Magazine subscription. I am sure it is the wish of all the class officers and die executive committee that you will want to continue and will submit your class dues.
After having sold his business in Illinois three years ago, Johnny Loveland moved to Stuart, Fla., to retire. At Martin Downs, his wife Diana has become a dedicated golfer, and in this case John is a golf widower. However, he takes some solace in owning a 36-foot trawler for investigating the Florida waters. Florida became the place to retire as one of his five sons lived there, but the others in California, Illinois, Maryland, and Virginia all can come to a nice location to visit Dad and Mom. His youngest son married in October. John spent time in Illinois recruiting for Dartmouth and at one time was a regional director but has yet to catch up with Dartmouth connections in Florida.
Had a good long talk with Doug Carter (some may remember his dad, Professor Carter of the economics department), trying to get an update on his career and family. Doug had just returned from his summer place near Bath, Maine. No doubt he escaped some of the hot weather experienced this summer around Maryland. Prior to his retirement in 1982 Doug worked for the USGS and, as a result, found himself involved in work in foreign countries. He taught in Chile for five years. Then, as an assistant to the U.N., he taught in China and visited Russia, Hungary, Yugoslavia, England, Nepal, and others. His last assignment had him working with NASA in their mapping-by-satellite program.
Since 1982 he has been working in the private sector as a consultant. Doug is grampa to seven grandchildren since his three daughters are all married with children. His only son, Bill, just graduated from Colorado State with a degree in landscape architecture and was fortunate to find a job in this field.
Doug's brother-in-law Doug Stevenson has also retired recently from Honeywell in Phoenix, Ariz. Around Thanksgiving time Doug Carter and wife Terri planned to visit his sister Kit and Doug Stevenson in Arizona.
Had an interesting experience as Leigh and I visited my brother at his beach club in Kennebunkport last summer. Who should show up but a group of George Bush's grandchildren, since the President is a member there. The entourage of kids and mothers was accompanied by secret service personnel and added a new dimension to this club.
The next column will have information about the class meeting at the mini-reunion and who was present. I want to take this opportunity for Leigh and I to wish you a Very happy holiday season and an even bigger and better New Year. How about a New Year's resolution to drop me a line.
