The big issue of discussion at the April Class Officers Weekend in Hanover was the increase in the price of the Alumni Magazine and its impact on class budgets. A substantial portion of the class dues each year goes toward the payment of the subscription price of the Mag. It has been the policy of the class to subscribe for all classmates whether dues were paid or not. Our policy is under review by your officers and executive committee, and it is quite possible that in the future only dues payers will receive the Mag.
With advertising revenue down and production costs up, die magazine had no choice but to up its subscription price or decrease its quality. No one is enthusiastic about a reduction in quality. The Alumni Magazine won Newsweek's Sibley Award for 1991 as the best periodical in higher education. This is the second year in a row the Mag has won honors, and even with an increase in price it is still a bargain. The officers hope all will keep up the payment of dues.
The Alumni as a whole had a 60.5 percent participation in the Alumni Fund Drive, and it may be of interest to some that our class participation was 63.3 percent.
Trying to dig up some news, I got on the phone again and made a series of calls. I found Bull Moose Stearns not in Hanover but at Fire Island, his old stomping grounds. He was in the process of rewriting a master plan for the community, and I interrupted his baking blueberry muffins for an aged neighbor. Certainly this is proof of the good works of the retiree clan.
Bob Leary is in his second month of retirement and enjoying five days a week of golf. Bob spent the last two years in the Winter months at Port Riche in a mobile home he owned. He decided that they needed a different location so sold the home and will be investigating a new location this winter.
Dick Day continues to work and help the economy in Massachusetts while spending some time at his summer place on Cape Cod. Dick does get to some of the fall football games in Hanover with friends in die class of 1950. He said that he sees Dick Russell on occasion, and that since he is another retiree, he is also a devotee of the links.
Isn't there someone out there who could drop me a note about a roommate?
