Let's begin by sharing part of a letter from Nancy Luebbert '78: "Like scores of the sons and daughters of Dartmouth, I met Ben Drew on one of the Ledyard Canoe Club's voyages to the sea. Ben exemplified all that was good and true about the College in his vigor, intelligence, and mostly in his open and honest love for his fellow human beings. It was a delight traveling with him, and I count myself blessed to have known him. I'd like to make a gift to the Ben Drew Memorial Fund."

As I forwarded Nancy's check to Jay Evans '49, who seems to be the current mentor to the Ledyard undergrads, I considered the importance of minding p's and q's. We never know when we are role models, yes?

Incidentally, I learned roundaboutly that a dedication ceremony was held at the Montshire Museum, which is in Norwich on the banks of the Connecticut. Those who wish to approach the museum in a canoe may dock at the Ben Drew Landing.

Frank Peyser, Bill Sumner, and I have a thing in common. We are chief cooks and bottlewashers in households where our ladies need more than a little help. Jeffie Sumner, in bright tones that belied her condition, told me she had been wheelchair-bound for over a year. As we talked she said, "Bill has just walked in the door with a bag of groceries." (Understandably Bill had no time for phone chat.) My Charlotte has now progressed from a walker, then a cane, to shank's mare. She still needs the relief of Tylenol, however, and osteoporosis has made her pretty fragile. Our doctor has put her on a new drug that we hope will build bone structure.

Bill Lieson has written a glowing letter about the enthusiasm he and Dottie have for continuing education, particularly as transmitted in elderhostels. Not having the space to share it in its entirety, I am forwarding it to another enthusiast, Bob Ackerberg. Oh-oh, you'll probably have read it in the newsletter before this issue reaches you.

Mike Cardozo tells me he is his own fourth cousin. Try that tune on your tuba and let me know how it plays. Mike, are you putting us on?
