Attendance at our 1987 mini-mini was down. For fewer than 25 diners, Thayer wouldn't let us have the Hovey Room. Greydon and Ethel Freeman, undaunted, found a private room in a restaurant that shall be nameless, less than a mile from Hanover. Let's keep it a secret from less deserving classes. Our spirits had matched the gloomy Saturday afternoon as Princeton shellacked the Big Green in Buddy Teevens's first game. But at Casual Crossingnot its real name of course—hearts were high over drinks and a fine dinner. Stalwarts attending: Allen, Drews, Olmsted,Pierponts, Rowes, Savages, Stoibers. (Where were you, Joe and Ruth Roberts?) And for an additional grace note: RhodaClark. The Drews, Ben and Sally, brought their charming daughter Holly, who was up from New York for a flying visit. Some of us try to duck the Big A, all city traffic in fact, but Holly loves New York and every diversion it offers.
Trust Grey to arrange a surprise. Who should drop in on us for ten minutes but the Big Coach himself. You'd think Buddy would have been downcast. Not at all. In fact, he was upbeat. He was so positive about the team's getting its act together that his visit put a happy nightcap on a most successful evening.
Let's skip the New Hampshire game (echo answers, "Hell, Yes!") and move quickly to Saturday, October 3. Davidson 7, Teevens 38. JOY in the west stands. JOZ, sitting in front of us with Alice, pretended to know exactly what was happening on every play. All I could do was follow with excitement the yardage gains of sophomore back Shon Page and cheer as loud as the rest when Craig Morton caught those passes. As for Phillis's touchdowns and the pass interceptions by the Green defense, well, how's that for getting an act together?
Bo and Ginna Wentworth, how about a report on your China odyssey?
