A note from Archie Mallon says that he had a successful knee replacement in June and gets around much better now. He didn't miss a Big Green football game this fall, whether home or away, at least through the Columbia game. His home-game routine takes him to his daughter Mary's home in Grand Isle, Vt., for the night, which gives him ample time to visit with three grandchildren. He couldn't have picked a better year to closely follow the football fortunes.
A note from Rog Stanwood indicates that he and Margaret attended a high school reunion in Needham, Mass. Traveling all the way from their home in Houston, Tex., the Stanwoods stayed with Bill and RuthBuckley, both of whom had been a classmates with Rog during Needham schooling. Rog reported that though Bill is limited in getting about because of arthritis, he nonetheless does regular hospital volunteer work and is a local government representative. After Needham the Stanwoods visited Jean Ayer, Kim's widow, on the shore of Lake Winnipesaukee, where they dined with Herb and GinnyMattledge. This all before swinging through Hanover, where Rog says the campus looked good to him despite the latest Review upheaval taking place at the time. Rog suggests that if the alum and non-grad backers of the Review would mind their own business, "some of us would be a lot happier."
Colin and Kaye Holman took a September bare-boat charter sailing the Jugoslavian islands on a Beneteau 40 with another couple. "We flew from home in Seattle to London, to Venice by Orient Express, to Rome and login by air. Had a great time, but were on the 'iron jenny' a lot due to light winds." Colin suggests it is better cruising in the Pacific Northwest except for the lack of nude beaches. Apparendy this trip was preparatory to a visit to the Mayo Clinic, where Colin had a cataract operation performed on October 29.
Another resident of Seattle, DickWoodward, sent along a green card stating that he welcomed the treatise from J.R. Boldt, and commenting that we all needed some help to form a better qualified opinion of the Hopkins Institute. However, he says, "JimDonovan at al. are entided to a rebuttal, which I hope will be urged."
We noted that our class Alumni Council representative, Tom Brooks, was placed on class organizations and bequests and trusts committees for the current year.
Our next column might well be directed to you from the warm climes of Florida, as Math and I will be in Vero beach for the month of February. Then it's back to the cold North for a few weeks before returning to Lake Wales, Fla., where Joe Batchelder is overseeing the March 21 meeting of the Class Executive Committee (and any other '39ers who might wish to attend). If you are in the vicinity, come on along. Joe can give you details. Call him at 813/676-5982.
