We are sorry once again to lead off with a sad report. Orval C."Shag" Hatch died on October 17 in Billings, Mont. (Obit in this issue.)
A much happier report came from BobMacleod in Malibu, Calif., who states he was married in early December to E. Louise Jardine, a longtime friend and companion. He retired on the first of this year after 30 years at Teen magazine and the Petersen Publishing Co., where he served as senior VP, editor, director, and executive publisher. He speaks of "many ailments that accompany 77 years." Tennis is a great help! But now the golf course beckons, where he hopes to regain a once-respectable handicap.
There was a nice note on the back of a Christmas card from Art and Nadene Ide, who made a sensational hike, with daughter Genet '78, down the Grand Canyon to Phantom Ranch on the Colorado River, and then out again. Art says it is a "tough hike for old men"5,000 feet vertical—and that he was the oldest one he saw or met on the trek.
Now I've got to put to right a few wrongs that we published in this column over the past few months. We received a dandy letter from Bud Little referring to a recent story we quoted, in which Bud, a mountain-troop doctor, parachuted down into the mountains to bring medical succor to injured airmen from a downed WW II training flight. Bud states that he was never in the Mountain Troops, but was assigned to the 2nd Air Force Rescue Service, a group started primarily to rescue the many heavy bomber training flight crashes as the planes traversed the mountains in the west. Today's handy helicopters, he says, did not show up until the fifties. Bud also reminds us that his career in sports, often identifying him with the Olympics, was in fact with the International Ski Federation (FIS). Bud had a cardiac bypass almost two years ago but still spends as much time as he can on golf course and ski hill.
Now then, we really screwed up the story on Dr.George Darr in the November column. We took it word for word from NedBayrd's Dartmouth Medicine column, only to learn via a letter from Charlie Thompson that he was the subject of the piece, not George. Our apologies all around on this.
Then we heard from the late Jack Sinclair's son Jack '83 that he is no longer married to Joanna Krischner '84, as we wrote in the obit. His new wife is named Joanne, and she has no connection with Dartmouth. Our apologies once again.
Endy Smith is recovering nicely from triple bypass surgery done on the 12 th of December. We were looking forward to his February 1 visit to Vero Beach, Fla., where we are situated until the end of April.
