Summer has taken its usual toll. We have lost three members of the Class since our last report. John Sullivan succumbed following a seizure suffered shortly after delivering a speech in Knoxville. Death occured this past February, with word reaching the College and your scribe this summer. Tom Mumford died on July 19 following a ten-month bout with cancer. Tom left Dartmouth after his sophomore year to finish up at Purdue, and thence to operate the family farm in Griffin, Indiana. Bob Whitcomb died suddenly in early August. Bob was administrator of the Boston law firm of Choate, Hall & Stewart at the time of his death.

There are a few appointments to record. Wells Bates has taken on the poast of reunion chairman, looking well in advance to our 40th. You will recall that Wells was a major cog in our successful 35th, serving under the Webster-Miller duo as reunion treasurer, so he knows the angles. O'Brien Boldt has accepted the job of editor-publisher of our 40th Reunion book, and will need the help and cooperation of the entire class to get the job done. Who can forget the fine job Obie did with the Daily Dartmouth in those glorious years on the Hanover Plain. Incidentally, Michael O. Boldt, a son, is a member of the class of '79. So too is David M. Merrill Jr., son of Barbara Vincens.

There is some news from the Connecticut shore. It starts in May with Bill and BunnyWebster acting once again as hosts, along with the Dartmouth Club of Southeastern Conn., to the annual Ledyard Canoe Club paddle from Hanover to Old Saybrook. Also we learn from Cornie Miller the following: "Old Webster took a train to Larchmont Friday (6/15) and navigated my old yacht, "Happie" in zero visibility for ten hours - Larchmont to Essex. Too bad he can't cook." Cornie, incidentally, became the Rear Commodore of the Essex Yacht Club this year.

Gordon King was elected to the presidency of the Hanover Shoe Inc. as of this past November ( 74), and Bud Blunt was elected president of Sheppard and Myons Inc., Hanover's major retailing division as of this past April. A nice one-two for the Class.

Charlie Davis had a "beautiful and expensive" trip to Jamaica this past June - a break from his professorial tasks at Yale's Calhoun College in New Haven.

In Menlo Park, Calif., Han Welton has stepped down as headmaster of the Menlo School to join the faculty of Menlo College. According to our information, Hank opted for the new post as he recovered from an illness from which he is "constantly improving but is less than robust," and after 11 years in the headmaster's post. Finally he offered that the unexpected teaching vacancy in his field at the College tipped the scales in the direction of an early retirement from administration. The Menlo School, founded in 1915, is one of the oldest independant college-preparatory schools on the San Francisco Peninsula and the entire West Coast area.

And talking of education, Dave Lilly was elected to the post of chairman of the board of Carleton College this past May.
