One of the highlights of Homecoming Weekend in October, if not the highlight from a class point of view, was the awarding of 1954 Class Awards to Fred Alpert, Dick Barker, Jay Chandler, and Dave Levine.

Fred Alperthas served the College and the class in many positions and has been a productive, caring, and community-minded citizen. His civic involvements have found him leading commissions and coalitions and serving on hospital, university, and arts boards.

Dick Barker was honored for his deep devotion to the College and to his class, having served as treasurer, head class agent and, most recently, as president.

Jay Chandler stated in his admissions application in 1949: "My aim in life is to help people." He has succeeded most admirable as a surgeon and teacher. Jay has been president of Princeton Surgical Associates and of the New Jersey chapter of the American College of Surgeons. Add to that his Clinical Professorship of Surgery at Rutgers' Robert Wood Johnson School of Medicine and his Excellence in Teaching award in 1985.

Dave Levine is considered by many to be one of the world's foremost surgeons and research experts in spinal curvatures. He has been president of the Scoliosis Research Society, an international organization of orthopedic surgeons and scientists, and contributed to the betterment of mankind through his numerous hospital and teaching appointments as well as his many presentations and publications.

Rockefeller Award for Distinguished Public Service. It was a warm and informative occasion ... a recitation of Jon's illustrious career in and out of Washington; Jon's talk on Third World problems from his perspective as Ambassador and U.S. Representative to the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations; and a Hanover Inn reception to honor Jon and Katie afterwards." The Dartmouth reported that President Freedman presented Jon with a plaque at a dinner following the reception and said, "He has been an outstanding public servant and an outstanding example of what a Dartmouth alumnus can do with his life."
