Looking back 69 years... In 1922 the new "selective process for admission to Dartmouth College" brought 552 of us freshmen to Hanover 57 coming from states west of the Mississippi. Delta Alpha two-day freshman initiation required outlandish accoutrements and atrocious behavior ... 8:00 a.m. daily chapel where Prexy Hopkins often sat at the lectern patting a dog

... dogs owned the campus, attended classes, enjoyed football games, joined fraternities.

An alleged "fainted" student at Doc Bowler's "smut class" was always carried out by at least six freedom-seeking freshmen. Midyear and final exams were always given at Alumni Gymnasium. Freshman picture fight, won by 1926, ended forever that antiquated activity because the next year we refused to compete. "Toastside and Coffee" the night-time yell up dormitory stairs was an all-time Dartmouth study-break.
