The Presidents' Day weekend featured a tour of the U.S.S. Abrahatn Lincoln (appropriate enough for the holiday) for the San Francisco Dartmouth Club, hosted by William Hayden. Bill ("T-ball" to his navy friends) and wife Kit greeted a throng of over 150 Dartmouth grads and family and treated us to a once-in-a-lifetime close-up look at the newest (and largest) aircraft carrier in Uncle Sam's fleet. The day culminated with lunch in the officers' galley and a wide-angle photo of the group on the spacious ship's deck.

Bill, who was recently advised of his promotion from Captain to Admiral (Commodore), will ship out to the Persian Gulf in April. This contrasts with the original June departure schedule which would have allowed Bill to attend his second son's wedding in May (to say nothing of Reunion). War has a way of doing these things. For the group photo, Bill wore his "D" sweater and Kit wore the " 1966" numerals. I pulled together the '66s for a group shot for passing around at Reunion.

On the Lincoln were Roger and CorkyBrett and Walter and Murni Knoepfel and family. Roger and I had made a brief attempt to transform this outing into a 1966 minireunion, but the popularity of the outing (the 150 spots were spoken for within hours of the notice going out), made that goal impossible. Both Roger and Walt will be in Hanover for June 13-16.

With reference to the reunion, your plans for a return to the College should be underway by now. Among your thoughts, consider prospects for Class Officer nominations. President Steve Lanfer advises that he has named Hector Motroni to head up a nominating committee. Send on your suggestions to Hector at 11 Sachem Road, Weston, CT 06883. Do not be reluctant to suggest the person that you know best. .. you yourself?

Is this another 25-year cycle? Several classmates are getting back stateside for June. In addition to Bob Hill and Steve Coles (both of whom scooted out of Dhahran before the war began), Al Keiswetter rotated out of Saudi Arabia to the State Department in Washington, where he is the director of regional affairs in the Bureau of Near East Affairs. Jim Cason also reports a return—this one from Bolivia where he was a political counselor—to Washington for a one-year stint at the National War College at Fort McNair.

Ed Grew, the globe-trotting geologist from the University of Maine, just returned from a five-month sojourn in the Soviet Pamir mountains. His route included Tashkent and Samarkand and covered terrain that Marco Polo and Michael Strogoff probably struggled over.

Finally, all you Cleary watchers can relax. Rob Cleary personally reports that he and Pam were married on October 6 in Vail. This ended one of our more enduring bachelorhoods and followed a courtship that included at least one football weekend (the 1989 mini-reunion). The Clearys honeymooned at the 1990 mini-reunion. Although there was a good representation of '66s at the wedding, we all look forward to seeing the newlywedsat the June Maxi-Reunion.
