Dean of Student Life Lee Pelton:
I HAVE A GENUINE Re-spect for the needs of students to have healthy fan, good fan. And that includes the kind of entertainment and social events that I myself might not participate in.
It's important that students have opportunities for play. It's not the business of the College to diminish those opportunities. But it is the business of the College to provide other kinds of opportunities where play includes the culture of the mind.
I would like to see a place where students felt comfortable in participating in a broad diversity of social events and types of playing. What I do not wish to occur is students feeling compelled or pressured to engage in some dominant type of play especially if that type of play is associated with abuse of alcohol.
During the rest of the week, I see a wide range of possibilities for engaging students and faculty outside classes "stretching the classroom," to put it metaphorically. This could mean courses taught in residential facilities, including fraternities and sororities. I could envision academic programs arranged by residence or arranged along some residential structure.
If I have an education philosophy, it's my wish to create opportunities where the contemplative life of students complements the active life of students.
