Middle age is surely approaching. I found myself on the Boston-New York Shuttle, with a broad array of possible free reading materials such as Cycle Magazine, Entertainment Weekly, and other scintillating periodicals. So of course I pick up The Economist and Lear's. I'm glad I did. Featured in the October Lear's is Lisa Conte. It's a terrific story about how she founded her company, Shaman Pharmaceuticals. I've written about Lisa before, but here's a quick update. The company, which develops drugs from tropical plants used by native healers, has three patent-pending drugs. Lisa, a biochem major and Tuck M.B.A., got the idea for the company by marrying her experience from a 1985 trip to Tanzania and her work in business development at Eli Lilly and a venture capital firm that funds high-tech health-care companies. Taking time out from all die activity of starting up a company, Lisa married Bob Thornton in 1990 and had their first baby last summer.

Someone else who is keeping quite a pace is Jane Alexander Kelley. Jane is still at Hewitt Associates, a compensation and benefits consulting firm. Husband E.J. Kelley '83 is a lawyer. Jane and E.J. have a son, Timothy, who is just over a year old. Pat Berry, who spoke with Jane recently, said that it was Jane's 5:30 a.m. workouts that were most impressive: "I don't know how she does it!"

Barney Oldfield and his wife, Robin, had a baby girl, Madeline, in mid-September. Barney and Robin (still in Ohio, I believe) have a little boy as well.

Another classmate popped up in a national publication again. Dave Shula, our favorite head coach, was profiled in Sports Illustrated. I had to rip six pages out of my magazine (OK, so I was at the doctor's office) to capture the whole article. It was an entertaining read on Dave's progression to coach, but what was really great was Dave's mom bussing him on the Dartmouth sidelines. Great pic!

And the Wall Street Journal included JakeWinebaum, editor and publisher of Family Fun Magazine, in a feature article about three "small magazine firms making it big!" Since I last reported on Jake, the magazine has thrived and continues to grow. Although the magazine was acquired by Disney in 1992, Jake retains full editorial control.

For those of you who haven't gotten national coverage yet, don't despair. Let me know what's going on with you and friends and I'll send it to the National Enquirer. Send news!
