You may know that' 50 provides half the funding ($600) for an administrative internship in the Office of Student Life. We call it our Collis Intern, because much of the work has to do with the Collis Student Center. Dick Echikson is our coordinator. He forwarded an impressive letter to the class from this year's intern, Margaret McCrudden '92. Some of the things she does: 1) Coordinates the Older and Wiser Program, which matches senior women with first-year women for advice on classes, professors, campus life, extracurriculars, etc. Plans are to include men next year. 2) The Leadership Discovery Program, designed by faculty, administrators, and undergraduates to prepare students to become effective leaders and group members. The program explores topics like social responsibilities and leadership issues, and encourages students to consider their roles in groups and how they perceive themselves. 4) Compiles and distributes the "Mouth," a calendar of lectures, films, music productions, and sports events. 4) She serves on the Campus Center Committee, the Collis Governing Board, and the Undergraduate Finance Committee. Outside the internship Margaret is doing an independent study in economics on trade opportunities in Latin America. Lastyear the Dickey Endowment gave her a three-month Lucas Family Third World Internship in schools in Rio de Janeiro, and last summer she worked with Latin Americans at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. She plays varsity tennis and is in Casque & Gauntlet. She thanks us for funding the internship, in which she is not only learning about administration but also providing liaison with the students to develop and improve projects in the Office of Student Life.
The '50 executive committee met in October. Dick reported that hopes are to expand Collis substantially and provide a reading room for newspapers (a la Great Issues). Jacques Harlow and Bill Carpenter reported that the Alumni Fund is no longer bringing in ten percent of the costs of the College of Liberal Arts. In 1991 '50 raised $158,000 piy pg s $175,000 goal; 40 leadership gifts ($1,000 and up) out of a goal of 51; 38 matching gifts from a goal of 50. Our goal for '92 is $165,000. If you're collecting Dartmouth glasses, note that the leadership level is raised to $1,769. Guess why? All money given to the College now will be counted toward the $425,000,000 Campaign for Excellence. If the Alumni Fund is short, the College budget may be adversely impacted.
Newc Eldredge reported that 13 new trees were planted in '91, eight of them from the '5O tree project. Memorial trees were given for Ted Prime, Alison Harlow, Linda Carpenter, and one by Frank Harrington for Rudolph Hockey '42. '50 dues are increased to $27.50. A committee will recommend whether the Class of '50 Award should consider a person's activity in the class, as well as his career. John Round '92 gave us a good perspective on current college life, and we adjourned to beat Cornell.
