Oscar A rias, formerpresident of Costa Ricaand Nobel laureate:

I THINK THAT IT ALL depends on who is in the White House. It determines whether the relationship between government and academia will be closer or weaker. In the Kennedy years there was a close relationship and he brought lots of scholars to government. Now governments might be surrounded by businessmen. If academia is not asked to join government, my wish for you as a collegian is to speak out and present in a strong way your own views. That's the role Latin American universities play.

We need to demilitarize the world, and I don't feel very happy with the close relationship between arms manufacturers and research that is being done at American universities.

Oscar Arias was a Montgomer Fellow at Dartmouth during the winterterm.
