Mary Anne McDonaldCarolan is an assistant professor of Italian at Wesleyan University. She earned her Ph.D. from Yale in 1989 with her dissertation, "Power and Language in Alessandro Manzoni's, I promessi stasi."

"What's it about?" I asked Mary Anne of I promessi.

"About 600 pages," she replied. Mary Anne's husband, Jim, was more forthcoming. "It's the greatest Italian novel next to The Godfather he explained. Mary Anne and Jim are the proud parents of a daughter, born in February 1990, and are expecting their second child.

Jennifer Clough lives with her husband, Greg, and their two children in Center Ossipee, N.H.Jennifer is "really into" basketweaving. Egg baskets, apple baskets, kindling baskets, mail baskets, weed baskets you name it, she weaves it. She also works part-time at the public library... teaching basket-making.

Vinny Caiola is the assistant controller for Lane Construction, which builds roads and bridges throughout Connecticut. I'd sure like to get a piece of their action. The last time I saw three lanes was in a bowling alley. Vinny, his wife Cheryl, and their 18-month-old son live in Manchester, Conn..

Over the past decade Jonathan Graves has designed dozens of magazine and book covers, frequently executing the art himself. Jonathan lives in Snohomish, Wash., where he crafts woodcarvings. Apparently inspired by the abundant rainfall, he has taken to carving Arks. Most people hear "Ark" and think of Noah. Jonathan's arks are miniatures. His most recognized carving, "Northwest Ark, has been featured on the covers of Early American Life magazine and the 1991 Eddie Bauer Christmas Gife Catalog.

Cathy McKinnon develops affordable housing in Hartford, Conn.. In late February, she enlisted with the ill-fated Tsongas campaign. In addition to fundraising, she was enlisted to find someone to play Santa Glaus opposite Senator Tsongas in a debate. ("I'm not Santa Claus." "I am Santa Claus. You are so." "So am I.")

Debbie Wolk Berger, mother of two boys ages two and five, edits math textbooks for Prentice-Hall. Debbie claims that the textbooks have to be completely rewritten. Were the answers wrong? Do we have to hand in our homework again?

Andy Graham is with Narragansett Capital in Providence. With Andy's help, Narragansett has gained a foothold in the home security business. "It's a growth industry for the nine-ties," explains Grambo. "In the eighties, they stole from the banks, the savings and loans, the elderly pensioners. The government finally put a stop to that. Now, they're going to come after people's homes. And when they do, we'll be ready." Grambo lives in Boston and commutes to Providence by bus.

Doctor, doctor, give me the news, I got a...

Hectic life, relates Dr. Susan Ball, an attending physician in internal medicine and assistant director of the outpaaent clinic at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital m New York City. Her patients can't pay. Her office looks like a bus station, and she gets so much junk mail 15 medical journals in one recent day that she's thinking of opening up a mini-storage landfill for doctors.

Great deal, claims Dr. Bill Barbaresi, who, together with a partner, has a thriving pediatric practice in Hampton and Portsmouth, N.H. Bill has three kids, ages seven, five, and 18 months. Though the cost of living is reasonable in New Hampshire, Bill's biggest savings are on medical bills. He takes care of his partner's kids and his partner does likewise Both are procreating madly in the hopes o outsaving the other.

Long drive, says Dr. Frank Leddy, at the four-hour jaunt he undertook last fall with his wife, Marion. They traveled to New York to visit Frank's family in Tarrytown and catch the Dartmouth-Columbia game. Frank has a urology practice in Waverly, R.I.
