News from the delivery room. Scott "Zeke"Zashin writes that on April 23 Guy Dietrich became the proud father of a baby girl, Caroline. That morning, Guy drove his wife, Virginia, to the hospital. Anticipating a prolonged labor, he went home for lunch. You guessed it. Nature intervened. Virginia gave birth, and Guy, at home watching "All My Children," missed the whole thing.Guy returned to the labor room, anticipating hours ahead of him, only to find Virginia and his new baby girl. "I tell ya," said Guy, "she really pulled a fast one."
Some classmates confuse me for a cryptographer. Last week, I received a one page note. It read, "The Wedding of Susan Jane Olson '87 and Todd Chapman Pellett '80. August 31, 1991—Omaha, Nebraska. BackRow:... Ted Bridges, Brent Bilger... ChuckBlades... Kirk Wickman. [Next Row:] KeithPickholz, Ty Anderson, Scott Slater. [Next Row:] Todd Pellett (groom). We'd appreciate publication. Thanks!" No picture, no signature. My crack handwriting analyst could do nothing to discern the content.
Robert Sanborn is a portfolio manager at the Oakmark Fund, a mutual fund recently established by Harris Associates, L.P. Bob thinks of himself as a bargain-hunter let loose on Wall Street, reports Crains Chicago Business. He likens his stock picking style to shopping at Filene's basement. Sounds good to me. Does he get to return the merchandise if he doesn't like it? Todd offers this tip: buy Horace Mann Educator's Corp., which sells home and auto insurance to teachers. (Note: angry readers should contact Bob directly.)
Maria Basescu recently became director of marketing for Marlboro College. And to think I thought Congress had banned cigarette advertising. Actually, Marlboro College is a small, four year liberal arts college located in Marlboro, Vt., distinguished by its Oxfordstyle system of one-on-one tutorial instruction and its leather skinned, craggy-faced professors who lope around campus on horseback.
Over the past few years lawyers have been dropping from Wall Street firms like bungee cord jumpers. They bounce back, but never to their previous heights. Rob Williams is the exception. My money says he'll be a partner at Millbank Tweed in New York before spring. Rob practices corporate and securities law.
Rob reports that Buddy Ide is getting married this month. The wedding festivities are right out of Homer's Odyssey. Buddy's bachelor party will take place at his family's weekend cottage "on an island in northern Minnesota in the middle of nowhere." According to Rob, it takes a weekend just to get there. The wedding is set for the San Juan Islands off Seattle, Wash. Buddy, a dermatologist, is marrying an ER doctor.
Bob and his wife, Leah '83,live in Larchmont with their two daughters.
Batman lives. By day, Hans Morris serves Smith Barney as a managing director in its municipal finance department. By night, he serves the Gotham City as a Guardian Angel.
