This has not been a good year. So far we have lost nine men in 1992, bringing my unofficial total of living classmates down to 399, 315 of whom are graduates. This column has previously reported the passing of Hank White and Bun Cotton. We must now add Hank Britton in January, BeecherChapin and Jim Brigden in February, BillKent, Ollie Webb, and Bob Warner in March, and Bill Buckley in April. Obits on all of these men will appear in a later issue.
A proposal by R.T. Maynard '31 was introduced at the Secretary Association meeting in May suggesting that the DAM eliminate obituaries entirely, limiting the mention of the deceased to a necrology listing. Obviously this would mean a savings of pages, presenting welcome financial relief to the magazine. The matter was tabled for the moment and secretaries were asked to solicit the opinion of their class executive committees for further direction. If any of you guys have any thoughts on the matter we would welcome your input.
A note from John Evans: "Reading the Drew Alumni Magazine I see that Mike Ellis, MA. in Lit from Drew, established an award at that University. His 'shadow' is long and has fallen on many people. The Dartmouth influence is pervasive."
Our faithful marine correspondent sends along a page from a periodical depicting the differences in Marine Corps uniforms. An accompanying photo displays a picture of a young Colonel James D. Donovan resplendent in the so-called World War I "dishpan" helmet worn at the outset of WWII.
Jack and Billee Coulson were scheduled to celebrate their 50th wedding anniverary by bringing their "tribe" to the Magic Kingdom for three days in late June. They expect to be in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, from July 9 through the mini in September.
Jerry Beatty edited a recently published book entitled Arctic Rovings: The Adventures ofa New Bedford Boy on Sea and Land, by Daniel Weston Hall. It is taken from original journals that date back to the Civil War era.
Herb and Jinny Mattlage spent the winter at The Greens, a retirement home in Hanover, and had a great time attending various events on the campus. They have returned to their home in Center Harbor, N.H., for the warmer months. Herb said there was a farewell lunch for George and BridgetBoswell before their departure for England and France. The Ralph Holbens, back from a trip to Spain in April, joined them at lunch.
Dick Storrs made Hanover around May 14 for his annual ten-day trip "home."
Jim and Doris Corner made an April swing through Oregon to visit their youngest. And in the health department, good news for a change. Hank and Dot Conkle both received a clean bill of health on the matter of cancer, which had afflicted them both.
